Notes: Situated only a stone's throw from Castle Howard, the stud was originally founded by the late Lord Grimthorpe (who's son, of Westow Hall, was still an owner of Tim Easterby's until his death in 2003), originally to breed hunters, switching to thoroughbreds in 1947. The stud was taken over by Peter (MH) Easterby in the mid sixties and has stood numerous stallions, most of whom were better racers than they were sires, although many have been prolific sires of winners, the progeny frequently trained by Peter, Tim or Mick Easterby. The most successful stallion was probably Lochnager who sired a number of good horses, whilst Dunbeath was a group one winning half brother to Saratoga Six who disappointed at stud. The most recent sire was Gothenberg (Polish Patriot - Be Discrete by Juinus) who was formerly trained by Mark Johnston to win the Berlin Brandenberg-Trophy der Landesbank G2, Sea World International S G2,Premio Emilio Turati G2, Tetrarch S G3 and finish second in the Prix de la Foret G1 and Premio Vittorio di Capua G1. Gothenberg looked,on paper, like the best potential sire Easthorpe had stood for a long time, unfortunately this horse was moved to Ireland for the 2000 season. This was because the stud is now a fully licensed training centre, with Tim Easterby utilising 30 boxes here as well as some good uphill gallops. In addition the stud has numerous boarders, including five mares owned by Sir Neil and Lady Westbrook. These were previously based at Stockwell Stud (owned by Peter's cousin Henry Easterby) before the decision was taken to all but close down that historic property. Most prominent of the Westbrook bred mares was Bollin Joanne (Duke of York S G3, Scarbrough S L, 3rd.Wokingham H) who was bred at Stockwell and her dam Bollin Zola (Alzao - Sauntry), who is also the dam of the Westbrook's best horse Bollin Eric (St.Leger G1, Lonsdale S G3, 2nd.King Edward VII S G2, Dante S G2, Hardwicke S G2 etc.). Unfortunately Bollin Joanne died in December 2001, but her first foal, Bollin Jeannie (by Royal Applause) has already won a race and will no doubt one day grace the paddocks at Easthorpe. Sir Neil and Lady Westbrook were voted TBA Flat Breeder of the Year 2002, bringing more reflected glory on Easthorpe.

Notes: Founded in 1982 by Capt & Mrs Trotter (she died in 2011). A small, picturesque, stud, East Layton are prominent pinhookers as well as having a small band of around four or five mares and have had many sales ring successes over the years. Perhaps their best year to date was 1987 when they sold a Simply Great colt for 100,000 guineas and a Sadler's Wells filly for 190,000 guineas at the Highflyer sales. In the same year they also sold 2 yearlings at the October sales for an average of 85,000 guineas - not bad for a stud that only had 4 mares at the time! More recently they sold two Barathea colts at the 1999 October sales for a total of 47,000gns, indeed they seem very keen on Barathea, one would surmise that they are perhaps shareholders in this good sire!. Their best winners to date include Lord Of The Field (1987 c by Jalmood - Star Face) who won the September S G3, Meld S G3, Feilden S L and was third in Irish Champion Stakes G1), Winker Watson (2005 c by Piccolo - Bonica) winner of the 2007 Norfolk Stakes G2 at Royal Ascot and the July Stakes G2, Barathea Blazer (Prix La Moskowa L, Tote Scoop6 Showcase Handicap, 3rd.Leicester Mercury S L, Tote Ebor H), Chipaya (October Stakes L, Redcar Gold Trophy), Nagida (Wokingham Handicap) and Stratford East. Foundation Mare Little Change (1980 Grundy - Pennycuick) is dam of 7 winners including the dams of both the aforementioned Barathea Blazer and also of Torosay Spring (Summer S G3, 2nd.Starlit S L). Mrs.Trotter has recently had the dual-two-year-old winner Choysia (2003 f by Pivotal - Bonica) in training with David Barker and is also a part owner of her half brother the multiple group winning homebred Winker Watson. Most recently the Mark Johnston trained Regal Monarch, who is not a homebred, has put up some good performances for East Layton, most notably when second in the 2016 Melrose Handicap.
Grand National runner-up Crisp was retired to East Layton and was hunted for eight seasons by Capt. Trotter, before dying in 1984. He is buried in the grounds of the hall in a spot marked by an inscription and a horse chestnut tree. Following the death of Mrs.Trotter the stud is now run by Paul Morrison, a former assistant to Patrick Haslam and Bill Watts and now a presenter on Racing UK.

Perhaps Eastwood Hall's greatest claim to fame in Col. Thompson's time was that for many years it receieved all the weanlings from Colonel The Hon Julian Berry's Hackwood Stud in Hampshire. These included such good horses as Martinmas (Greenham Stakes), Rowantree (Fred Darling Stakes), Centurion (Cesarewitch Handicap), Quarryknowe (National Stakes) and Fair Season (Horris Hill Stakes, Lincoln Handicap), all raised at Barningham. In addition however, before he started to board them at Kingsclere, Paul Mellon's UK broodmare band used to be based at New England Stud in Newmarket, many of the weanlings were subsequently transferred to Eastwood Hall and these certainly included the admirable (and well travelled!) Glint Of Gold (Gran Criterium G1, Derby Italiano G1, Grand Prix de Paris G1, Preis von Europa G1, Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud G1, Grosser Preis von Baden G1, Great Voltigeur S G2, 2nd.Epsom Derby G1, St Leger G1). Most likely Glint of Gold's equally well travelled full brother Diamond Shoal was also raised at Eastwood, although I have not specifically seen this stated anywhere. Furthermore in the sixties some of Lady Macdonald-Buchanan's (Lavington, Lordship and Egerton Studs) weanlings used to be sent to Eastwood after weaning, only to return to Newmarket the following July. Not to be confused with Eastwood Stud in Co.Tyrone.
Now recently the property has been owned by the Railton family and Eastwood Hall together with cottage, flat, stabling and 106 acres was placed on the market in May 2007 with Smiths Gore for £2m, the idyllic small stud for somebody .....

Etchingham Stud

Notes: Mrs.Perkins has bred numerous winners at Etchingham including Chummy's Special (Norfolk Stakes G3 of 1980 and Champion in Malaysia) and Go Too. The stud has obtained upto 15,500 guineas for yearlings and 21,000 gns for a two year old filly (a 3/4 sister to Chummy's Special) at the Doncaster 'Breeze-Up' sales of 1986. Etchingham is possibly most famous as the retirement home of the twice champion hurdler and Ebor winner Sea Pigeon, who sadly passed away in October 2000, aged 30. In the early 80's there was another Yorkshire Etchingham Stud, owned by Mrs.Catton of Hesketh Hall, Boltby, this 'other' stud was near Burythorpe.
