Date
29/12/2021 Lumby permit holder Jane Makin had a good result at Doncaster today when Schiaparannie was a decent third in the £33,762 Yorkshire Silver Vase Mares' Chase L at Doncaster. Ruth Jefferson had a good winner at Kelso whilst Paul Midgley, Karl Burke and David O'Meara all scored on Southwell's evening card.
26/12/2021 Standard Boxing Day fayre sees Philip Kirby's Top Ville Ben finish a decent third in the Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase Gd3 at Wetherby where there are local winners for Tim Easterby, Micky Hammond and Sara Ender with Micky Hammond also scoring at Sedgefield.
11/12/2021 Sue Smith's Midnight Shadow was a decent third, only a short-head out of second, in the Racing Post Gold Cup Handicap Chase Gd3 at Cheltenham this afternoon. Doncaster had a three runner Grade 2 Novices' Chase .... but no local winners. Julie Camacho and Alan Brown had a winner apiece at Newcastle whilst Wolverhampton's evening card saw winners for Simon Whitaker, Richard Fahey and Kevin Ryan. Sir Robert Ogden's Sicklinghall Stud may have been dispersed at the December Sales, but he is credited as the breeder of Brigante Sabino, who took his second listed race when landing the Premio U.N.I.R.E. L at Naples this afternoon. Finally it was announced earlier this week that Norton Grove Stud have yet another stallion recruit for next season, having gained Century Dream.
01/12/2021 In bloodstock news it has been announced that former Mark Johnston charge Buratino will be relocated for stallion duties from Ireland to Hedgeholme Stud next season, standing for £3,000. Meanwhile yesterday down at the December Sales in Newmarket Karl Burke's Dandalla sold for 750,000gns and Richard Fahey's Fev Rover for 695,000gns. Julie Camacho took the opener on Kempton's evening card.
19/11/2021 There's no stopping the machine that is Lord Glitters ; today David O'Meara's eight year old landed the Bahrain International Trophy G3 in Bahrain, coming from last to first having zigzagged his way through the field. Richard Faheys' Fev Rover was a decent fourth. This victory takes Lord Glitters'Yorkshire' winnings to over £2m, overtaking Laurens in the 'Yorkshire Winningmost Top 10', which has also seen Glass Slippers push Dee Ex Bee off the list. The recently announced retirements of Brando and Glass Slippers also means that Lord Glitters is now the only 'active' horse on the list. Peter Niven has a winner at Catterick.

13/11/2021 Boom ! Following on from his victory in 2020's Dipper Novices' Chase, and the 2019 Relkeel Hurdle, Sue Smith's Midnight Shadow lands yet another Cheltenham victory when taking the £90,032 Paddy Power Gold Cup Handicap Chase Gd3, overcoming drama at the last. At Lingfield Julie Camacho's Judicial is second in the Golden Rose Stakes L with Mark Johnston's returning-from-stud The Last Lion looking like he needed the race. John Quinn provides the only local winner at Wetherby, whilst Brian Ellison strikes on Wolverhampton's evening meeting.
06/11/2021 At Aintree Sam England's Manwell runs well to be third in the £41,152 Grand Sefton Handicap Chase, albeit finishing some twelve lengths behind the second. At Doncaster Kevin Ryan's Magical Spirit is a head second in the Wentworth Stakes L with Richard Fahey's Rhythm Master back in third, Tony Coyle provides the only local winner. David O'Meara has a winner at Chelmsford whilst Ben Haslam and Micky Hammond both score under National Hunt rules at Kelso. In the evening Kevin Ryan's Emaraaty Ana is best of the European's when fourth in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint G1 at Del Mar, only a neck out of third.
29/10/2021 Quite good for the Yorkshire raiders at Newmarket today with decent winners for Karl Burke (Spycatcher) and Ben Haslam (Solo Saxophone) and Richard Fahey's Barbanera a strong third in the 'Bosra Sham' Fillies' Stakes L. No joy at Wetherby, but Adrian Keatley scored on Kempton's evening card.
28/10/2021 Karl Burke's Favourite Child (by former Tim Easterby star Mattmu) was a decent second in the Criterium de Vitesse L at (Paris)Longchamp this afternoon, with stablemate Guilded fourth.
26/10/2021 Adrian Nicholls' standard bearer Mo Celita was a decent third in the Prix de Seine-et-Oise G3 at Chantilly this afternoon. Tim Easterby, Grant Tuer, Bryan Smart and Liam Bailey all scored at Catterick whilst Karl Burke had a double on Newcastle's evening card, where Antony Brittain also scored.
24/10/2021 Safe to say that yesterday didn't go particularly well, Mark Johnston's Royal Patronage was struck into in the Futurity and, as a result, eased down. Today however Sue Smith's Midnight Shadow was a decent third in the Monet's Garden Old Roan Handicap Gd2 at Aintree. Earlier this week it was announced that Norton Grove Stud would be standing Marmelo (Duke of Marmalade) next season. Marmelo, winner of five group races and runner-up in the 2018 Melbourne Cup G1, has been relocated from France as, primarily, a National Hunt sire.
19/10/2021 More black type today, this time of the upper case variety, when Karl Burke's Honey Sweet landed the Prix Zeddaan L at Deauville. Les Eyre took the last at Newcastle and Philip Kirby took a race on Kempton's evening card.
18/10/2021 Mark Johnston's Approachability gained his first black type today at Pontefract when third in the Silver Tankard Stakes L. Richard Fahey and John Quin provided the local winners, but highlight of the day was the sight of a recovering Harriet Bethell completing a lap of the course for charity. Kevin Ryan's star sprinter Brando has retired at the age of nine with lifetime earnings of over £1.1m, career victories ranging from the 2016 Ayr Gold Cup to the 2017 Prix Maurice de Gheest G1, as well as three Group Three races.
16/10/2021 Champions Day at Ascot, most expectation for Yorkshire was in the British Champions Sprint G1 but the favourite, Tim Easterby's Art Power, suffered from the draw and could only manage fourth, albeit only a neck out of third. However Brian Ellison's Tashkhan was an excellent second in the British Champions Long Distance Cup G2 , cementing his position somewhere near the top of the staying division and he looks an excellent prospect for next season. On home soil at Catterick there are wins for Adrian Keatley, David O'Meara, Declan Carroll and Philip Kirby. John Quinn had a winner over hurdles at Stratford and Jessica Macey took the last on Wolverhampton's evening card.
08/10/2021 A big day at Newmarket, today and tomorrow, sees the Karl Burke duo of Illustrating (homebred at Branton Court Stud) and Guilded finish second and third respectively in the Cornwallis Stakes G3. Richard Fahey, David O'Meara (Shelir in the £12,885 Download The Casumo App Today Handicap), Grant Tuer and Tim Easterby provide the local winners at York. Bryan Smart scored on Newcastle's evening card.
03/10/2021 Arc day at Longchamp. Kevin Ryan's Glass Slippers is third in the Prix de l'Abbaye G1 with Adrian Nicholls' Mo Celita only a short head back in fourth.
02/10/2021 No UK Flat racing, tomorrow, but a busy schedule today. On Redcar's feature day of the season David O'Meara's Azano took the Guisborough Stakes L , and the Theakston Stud bred Chipotle landed the feature £85,065 Two Year Old Trophy L with Karl Burke's Last Crusader picking up £32,250 for second. O'Meara had a double on the card, as did Mark Johnston whilst Tim Easterby and Paul Midgley also paid visits to the winners circle. No Yorkshire winners at Ascot but John Quinn's Highfield Princess was third in the October Stakes L, David O'Meara's Eagles By Day second in the Cumberland Lodge Stakes G3 and Richard Fahey's Ventura Diamond third in the Bengough Stakes G3. At Newmarket Ed Bethell's Fearby was second in the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes and Karl Burke's Favourite Child third, picking up £33,210 and £14,775 respectively. Richard Fahey provided Yorkshire's sole winner at Chester.
25/09/2021 Just Wow. Three Yorkshire Group winners today. The main action came on Cambridgeshire Day at Newmarket ; albeit we had no joy in the signature race itself, although it seems a trifle churlish to point that out ! The highlight came in the Middle Park Stakes G1 in which the favourite, Richard Fahey's Perfect Power, ran on well to land his second Group One in a row ; the last Yorkshire trained dual Group One winning juvenille .....??? I'm not sure there ever has been one since the introduction of the pattern ! Arguably a more exciting race was the Royal Lodge Stakes G2 in which Mark Johnston's stongly fancied Royal Patronage appeared to loose his way in the infamous dip, losing about 4 lengths to Coroebus, but then rallied spectatularly to win by a neck. It could be a very exciting 2022 ! In between Karl Burke's Guilded was a 100-1 fourth in the Cheveley Park Stakes G1 whilst, later on the card, Ed Bethell's Eidikos was second and Richard Fahey's Ana Gold third in the £20,616 'Jersey Lily' Fillies' Nursery. Meanwhile over at the Curragh Tim Easterby, not to be outdone, saddled Art Power to be a very comfortable five length winner of the Renaissance Stakes G3. At Haydock Antony Brittain's Mondammej landed (by a head from Tim Easterby's Copper Knight) another decent prize when taking the £18,039 Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap whilst down the road at Chester there were winners for Nigel Tinkler, Mark Johnston and Tim Easterby. Closer to home at Ripon the locals took all bar one of the races thanks to a Mark Johnston double as well as wins for Ed Bethell, Sam England, Kevin Ryan and Nigel Tinkler. David O'Meara had a winner on Chelmsford's evening card.
23/09/2021 Mark Johnston's Nayef Road has been gradually returning to form and that progress was franked today when he ran out the six length winner of the Jockey Club Rose Bowl L at Newmarket. Johnston had a double at Pontefract, as did Roger Fell whilst Paul Midgley and John Wainwright had to make do with a single winner apiece. Philip Kirby struck at Perth, whilst Karl Burke and Adrian Keatley were both amongst the winners the Wolverhampton.
22/09/2021 Mark Johnston's West End Charmer gained his first bit of black type when third in the Foundation Stakes L at Goodwood today. A Karen Tutty double was the highlight a Redcar where Tim Easterby, David Barron and Nigel Tinkler also scored. Tattersalls announced a few days ago that they will be selling all Sir Robert Ogden's breeding stock at the December Sales ; 24 fillies and mares including such luminaries as Amazing Maria.
18/09/2021 Maybe Leeds United need to move to the Scottish Premier League to get a win this season ? Kevin Ryan's Bielsa (bred by Highbank Stud) ploughed a lonely furrow up the rail to land today's £77,310 Ayr Gold Cup, with John Quinn's Mr Wagyu back in third. Earlier Mark Johnston, having landed the opener, also saddled Maydanny to win the Doonside Cup L with Kevin Ryan's Juan Elcano back in third. Ryan's good day also saw Hala Hala Athmani finish third in the Firth Of Clyde Stakes G3. Tim Easterby's Staxton landed the £25,770 Ayr Silver Cup. John Quinn won the penultimate race whilst Mark Johnston made it a treble by landing the last. No winners at Newbury, but fairly successful for Ed Bethell with Moss Gill second in the Dubai International Airport World Trophy G3 and stablemate Fearby third in the Mill Reef Stakes G2. Catterick saw wins for Karl Burke, Roger Fell, Mark Johnston and Richard Fahey whilst Tom Tate had a winner at Newmarket where Mark Johnston's Themaxwecan was third in the Cesarewitch Trial Handicap.
17/09/2021 The Western Meeting at Ayr is hotting up a little, although the main feast is obviously tomorrow. Today Karl Burke's Dandalla took the Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies' Stakes L, with John Quinn's Keep Busy kept out of second by a short head. Kevin Ryan and Richard Fahey took the first two races.
15/09/2021 Tuesday listed action sees Mark Johnston's Freyja runner-up in the John Musker Fillies' Stakes L at Yarmouth whilst David O'Meara's Escobar occupies the same position in the Fortune Stakes L at Sandown where John Quinn lands the opener. The local (ish!) trainers almost go through the card at Beverley with only Yorkshire born and bred James Tate standing in the way of a clean sweep courtesy of Kevin Ryan, Tim Easterby, Mark Johnston (a double), Nigel Tinkler, David O'Meara and Roger Fell. Ben Haslam has a winner over hurdles at Kelso.
12/09/2021 Kevin Ryan's Glass Slippers is a faintly disappointing third in the Flying Five Stakes G1 at The Curragh although that will hopefully put her in good condition for the Abbaye, the winner, Romantic Proposal, is owned by Steve Parkin so will potentially finish up at Branton Court Stud. Adrian Nicholls' Mo Celita is a neck fourth in the Prix du Petit Couvert G3. Grant Tuer (Lezardrieux in the £12,885 Sky Bet Sunday Series Sprint Handicap), David O'Meara (Turandot, homebred by Sir Robert Ogden, in the £15,462 Sky Bet Sunday Series Fillies' Handicap) and Mick & David Easterby (Yorkshire Lady in the £15,462 Sky Bet Sunday Series Middle Distance Handicap) all have good winners at Haydock. Karl Burke (Stylish Performer in the £11,880 Betsi Elsenham Handicap) and Mark Johnston have winners at Chelmsford whilst Karl Burke and Tim Easterby strike at Musselburgh.
11/09/2021 It might have been St Leger day but the Yorkshire highlight today came at Leopardstown, and in defeat, with Richard Fahey's Fev Rover back to form when second in the Boomerang Mile G2. At Doncaster Tim Easterby's Count d'Orsay was third in the £38,655 Portland Handicap and Geoff Harker's Scottish Summit second in the £25,770 Vermantia Handicap. Another horse coming back into form was Tim Easterby's Wells Farhh Go, third in the Stand Cup Stakes L at Chester where Richard Fahey had a double and Declan Carroll took the last. Mark Johnston and Nigel Tinkler had a winner apiece at Bath. Late afternoon action saw Jedd O'Keeffe score at Lingfield and Ann Duffield, Brian Ellison, David O'Meara and Tim Easterby do likewise at Musselburgh.
10/09/2021 The St Leger meeting at Doncaster hasn't been going that well for the locals thus far; Paul Midgley's Tarboosh was third in the Scarbrough Stakes L on opening Wednesday (and Geoff Harker took the last) and today Mark Johnston's Nayef Road was third in the Doncaster Cup G2 and Julie Camacho's Raatea second in the £27,000 Cazoo Handicap. Roger Fell and Tim Easterby both had winners at Chester this afternoon.
04/09/2021 Wow. To says things went well at Haydock today could be considered something of an understatement. The opener was the Ascendant Stakes L and that went to Kevin Ryan's promising Triple Time. Ed Bethell's debut season continues to go from strength to strength and today he gained his first group winner when Artistic Rifles took the Superior Mile Stakes G3, with David O'Meara's Lord Glitters in fourth. The winning trainer was in Ireland, leaving his father James to face the press. The third race was the £51,540 'My Odds Boost' Betfair Handicap which went the way of Mark Johnston's Golden Flame. The best was yet to come however as, after letting the Old Borough Cup go elsewhere, Kevin Ryan was back to the fore when Emaraaty Ana, who has gradually been getting back to his two year old form, followed up on his Nunthorpe G1 second when taking the Betfair Sprint Cup G1 by a short head. As a gelding he could be around for several more seasons, with the Breeders' Cup on the agenda for later this year. The Yorkshire raiders weren't finished yet though as Antony Brittain landed one of the biggest wins of his career when Mondammej took the £16,200 Be Friendly Handicap, Tim Easterby's Copper Knight finishing second. Oddly Yorkshire did less well at Thirsk with just the two winners courtesy of David Barron and Ollie Pears. Brian Ellison struck on Wolverhampton's evening card.
02/09/2021 Busy for a Thursday. The afternoon highlight was Karl Burke's Illustrating (homebred at Branton Court Stud ) who finished third in the Prix d'Arenberg G3 at Longchamp. Mark Johnston's Outbreak was an impressive winner at Salisbury whilst Brian Ellison had a double at Sedgefield. The evening action centred on the Racing League at Newcastle and this saw Paul Midgley's Saluti pick up his second win of the series when landing the £25,770 William Hill Double Your Odds Racing League R36 Handicap, with Richard Fahey's Show Me Show Me in second. Earlier Tim Easterby's Delgrey Boy deadheated in the William Hill Extra Place Races Racing League R33 Handicap whilst David O'Meara's Firmament took the £25,770 William Hill Play Responsibly Racing League R34 Handicap and Richard Fahey's Strike Red the £25,770 William Hill Build Your Odds Racing League R35 Handicap.Michael Herrington had a winner at Chelmsford.
29/08/2021 Richard Fahey's Toro Strike returned to form this afternoon with a strong two length victory in the Supreme Stakes G3. Fahey also had a winner at Beverley where Bryan Smart and Mick & David Easterby both had doubles as well as winners for Mark Johnston and Tim Easterby.
28/08/2021 A typically busy late summer/Bank Holiday weekend day today. Highlight of the day was Mark Johnston Dancing King taking the March Stakes G3 at Goodwood under a typical Joe Fanning front running masterclass, albeit with the added complication of losing one rein in the dying strides. David O'Meara's Escobar was second in the preceeding £25,770 tote Quadpot Starts Here Handicap. That situation was pretty much reversed at Newmarket with David O'Meara's Summerghand taking the Hopeful Stakes L and Mark Johnston's Lucky Deal second in the £20,316 Close Brothers Asset Management Handicap. Closer to home at Beverley Kevin Ryan's Justanotherbottle and Julie Camacho's Judicial were second and third respectively in the Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes L and there were winners for Nigel Tinkler and Mick & David Easterby whilst Tim Fitzgerald got off the mark for the season. Nigel Tinkler had a great treble at Redcar's evening meeting whilst Karen Tutty, Karl Burke and Ed Bethell had to make do with a mere single winner apiece.
26/08/2021 A positive glut of winner today but the highlight was Richard Fahey's Show Me Show Me landing the £25,770 William Hill Free Or Four Racing League R25 Handicap at Lingfield's evening 'Racing League' meeting. Mark Johnston had a double at Chelmsford and also at Carlisle where there were also winners for Karl Burke, Kevin Ryan and Lawrence Mullaney. Hurdling winners at Sedgefield for Brian Ellison, Justin Landy and Philip Kirby.
22/08/2021 Yet another Group One winner today when Richard Fahey's Perfect Power goes from first to last to land a commanding victory in the Prix Morny G1 at Deauville, the Middle Park now beckons. At Sandown Mick & David Easterby's Yorkshire Lady took the £20,616 Sky Bet Sunday Series Fillies' Handicap whilst Tim Easterby's Give It Some Teddy was second in the £20,616 Sky Bet Sunday Series Mile Handicap. Mark Johnston had a winner at Brighton.
21/08/2021 A bit quieter at York today but Karl Burke's Attagirl put up a good performance to land the Roses Stakes L. Earlier John Quinn's ultra-progressive Highfield Princess ran her best race yet to be second in the City Of York Stakes G2 whilst old-favourite Lord Glitters occupied the same position in the opening Strensall Stakes G3. Later on the card Roger Fell's Cockalorum was third in the £36,078 Sky Bet Handicap and Kevin Ryan's Digital and Nigel Tinkler's Imperium Blue were respectively second and third in the closing £36,078 Sky Bet Apprentice Handicap. At Chester Mark Johnston's Dancing King was a decent second in the Chester Stakes L and there were also winners for Kevin Ryan, Tim Easterby (Sunday Sovereign in the £15,462 Beefeater Gin Handicap) and Nigel Tinkler whilst Jedd O'Keeffe took the opener at Sandown, where Mark Johnston's Austrian Theory was a slightly disappointing fourth in the Solario Stakes G3. Karl Burke had a winner on Chelmsford's evening card.
20/08/2021 So anyway, as I was saying, Tim Easterby's excellent Ebor meeting continued today when Winter Power swept home to collect the Nunthorpe Stakes G1 in grand style, with Kevin Ryan's Emaraaty Ana back in second for good measure. This was Winter Power's third course and distance 'black type' win of the season, and the trainers first Group One winner since Somnus in the 2004 Prix de la Foret G1 ; although he did win three Group One's that season ; hopefully a good omen ! Roger Fell's The Flying Ginger, a 33-1 shot, ran a blinder to land the £36,078 Assured Data Protection EBF Fillies' Handicap, Yorkshire's only other winner on the card. The Gimcrack Stakes G2 saw Kevin Ryan's Gis A Sub finish a good second, with Ed Bethell's Fearby fourth. Ryan had three runners-up all told with Throne Hall occupying that position by a neck in the opening £36,078 Sky Bet Handicap, in which Tim Easterby's Dark Jedi was third. The last was the £36,078 Sky Bet Mile Handicap which saw Nigel Tinkler's Isla Kai finish second and Grant Tuer's King Triton third. Elsewhere Nigel Tinkler took the opener at Kempton and Tim Easterby, Grant Tuer and John Quinn all had winners at Musselburgh. Evening racing sees wins at Newcastle for Richard Fahey, Julie Camacho, John Quinn, Mick & David Easterby and Brian Ellison.
19/08/2021 Tim Easterby's good Ebor meeting continued today with 28-1 shot Cruyff Turn holding on by a neck to land the £51,540 Clipper Logistics Heritage Handicap and stablemate Atomic Lady a neck second in the £98,360 Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sales, landing £39,360 for connections. Later on the card David O'Meara's Improvised was second in the £36,078 EBF Fillies' Handicap. Ruth Carr had a winner on Wolverhampton's evening card.
18/08/2021 A very good start to the Ebor meeting at York with Tim Easteby's Copper Knight landing the opening £36,078 Sky Bet And Symphony Group Handicap and Mark Johnston's largely unregarded Royal Patronage taking the next, the Acomb Stakes G3. We then had to wait a short while before Declan Carroll's Tweet Tweet (homebred by Trish Johnson at Bishop Wilton Stud) won the £36,078 IRE Incentive, It Pays To Buy Irish Stakes (Fillies' Handicap), with Paul Midgley's Mid Winster in second and David O'Meara's Noorban in third .... non of them bred in Ireland ! Kevin Ryan's Pockett Rockett was a decent second in the closing £36,078 Sky Bet Nursery Handicap. Elsewhere Kevin Ryan had a double at Carlisle with David O'Meara, Mark Johnston and Ann Duffield also scoring.
14/08/2021 Ripon's big 'cap of the year, the £38,655 Great St Wilfrid Handicap stays local with victory for Kevin Ryan's Justanotherbottle, with Tim Easterby's Golden Apollo second. Sam England's Mark's Choice took the 'Consolation' race whilst there were also wins for Karl Burke and Tim Easterby. Yorkshire took the first and last at Doncaster, courtesy of David O'Meara and Grant Tuer whilst Justin Landy struck at Perth. Evening racing yields a winner at Bath for Mark Johnston who's farrier Justin Landy doubles up at Market Rasen, as does Sam England.
13/08/2021 Karl Burke's Attagirl was a decent second, beaten only a head, in the St Hugh's Stakes L at Newbury today. Burke also took the opener at Nottingham and a race on Thirsk's evening card where Nigel Tinkler and William Bethell also had winners whilst Julie Camacho struck on Newmarket's evening card.
08/08/2021 No joy in Ireland today but over at Deauville Adrian Nicholls landed his first 'black type' win when Mo Celita took the Prix Moonlight Cloud L ; the sixth win of the season for this progressive filly, albeit by far the most significant. Earlier Kevin Ryan's Brando was back in form when fourth, only a nose and a head out of second, in the Prix Maurice de Gheest G1, a race he won in 2017 as a five-year-old. Waterlogged Haydock was off, but Nigel Tinkler and Kevin Ryan each had a win at Leicester.
07/08/2021 A relatively quiet day, Shergar Cup notwithstanding. At Ascot, for the aforementioned 'International' jockey contest, Mark Johnston's State of Bliss took the £20,655 Shergar Cup Classic, with stablemate Annandale second. Earlier Johnston's Desert Safari was a shorthead second in the £20,655 Shergar Cup Dash, with Kevin Ryan's Magical Spirit third and David O'Meara's Young Fire was second in the £20,655 Shergar Cup Mile. At Newmarket Mark Johnston's Value Theory was a reasonable third in the Sweet Solera Stakes G3 whilst David O'Meara had a winner at Haydock. Evening racing at Ayr sees winners from John Quinn and Kevin Ryan.
01/08/2021 Result of the day came at Chester where Julie Camacho's Judicial took the Queensferry Stakes L comfortably and there was also a winner for Mark Johnston. Henry Hogarth had a winner at Market Rasen whilst a Thirsk Tim Easterby scored a treble, headed by Give It Some Teddy taking the feature £13,085 Summer Cup Handicap, Ollie Pears had a double and David O'Meara and Brian Ellison had to make do with just the one winner apiece.
31/07/2021 Again just one Goodwood winner today with John Quinn's progressive Mr Wagyu landing the £25,770 Stewards' Sprint Handicap, aka the Stewards' Cup 'Consolation' .... the actual Stewards' Cup saw David O'Meara's Gulliver finish second by a neck, garnering £54,382 for connections in the process. Doncaster brought wins for David O'Meara and Adrian Nicholls. Eveing racing at Hamilton saw wins for Ed Bethell (Artistic Rifles in the £15,462 Almada Mile Handicap), Kevin Ryan (Emaraaty Ana in the Soba Conditions Stakes), Mark Johnston and Tim Easterby
30/07/2021 Another winner at Glorious Goodwood today for Mark Johnston with Maydanny starting to live up to his pedigree by taking the £77,310 Golden Mile Handicap, with the David O'Meara duo of Rhoscolyn and Escobar occupying second and third, Johnston also supplied the runner-up in the last two races, Mick & David Easterby having supplied the third, Elysian Flame, in the opener. More significantly Kevin Ryan's three-time Group One winner Glass Slippers made her seasonal reappearance and was duly third in the King George Stakes G2, keeping on nicely. Brian Ellison took the last at Wolverhampton. Evening racing saw Adrian Nicholls take the last at Newmarket whilst Grant Tuer, David O'Meara, Ben Haslam, Paul Midgley and Philip Makin all scored at Musselburgh.
29/07/2021 'Just' the one winner today at Goodwood with Mark Johnston's Qaader, group placed as a juvenile, landing the £38,655 Unibet "15 To Go" Kincsem Handicap by a comfortable four lengths, despite giving weight to all bar one, Johnston's Brazilian Beach was second in the maiden fillies contest later on the card. The following race was the Richmond Stakes G2 in which Richard Fahey's Khunan put up an odds-defying performance to finish a very good second, picking up £32,250 for his efforts, better fancied stablemate Perfect Power only finished fifth but was actually only a nose and two necks further back in a close finish. Some 'Racing League' nonsense this evening, a bit like the Derby on a Saturday, extending the major festivals and messing around with distances I'm not sure I entirely approve, but it's certainly very good prize money .....OK, so I'm warming a bit to the Racing League after Yorkshire landed the first two races at Newcastle with Paul Midgley's Saluti landing the £25,770 William Hill Pick Your Places Racing League Race One (Handicap) and Richard Fahey's Strike Red the £25,770 William Hill Plus Bet Club Racing League Race Two (Handicap). Couldn't they come up with better names though ? Mark Johnston and David O'Meara had a winner apiece on Epsom's evening card.
28/07/2021 Better at Goodwood today, winners wise, albeit no Group One placing this time. The second race was the Oak Tree Stakes G3 in which Kevin Ryan's Last Empire proved victorious, having led the field from one furlong out and holding on, John Quinn's Highfield Princess was third, only a neck out of second. The next race was the Molecomb Stakes G3, no winner in this but Ed Bethell's Fearby was a strong second and Kevin Ryan's Boonie was third. No joy in the Sussex Stakes G1 although Richard Fahey's Space Traveller was a thoroughly respectable sixth. The next was the £25,770 Alice Keppel EBF Fillies' Conditions Stakes in which Karl Burke's Illustrating (homebred at Branton Court Stud) took the honours with Kevin Ryan's Anadora a decent second. Mark Johnston's Freyja was third in the £18,319 EBF Premier Fillies' Handicap. Redcar sees a double for Tim Easterby with additional local winners supplied by Karl Burke and David O'Meara, with the later also landing a win on Leicester's evening card.
27/07/2021 Day one of Glorious Goodwood, and 'our' only winner comes courtesy of John Quinn's faithful servant Lord Riddiford who took the £15,702 Back To Goodwood Handicap tidily from stablemate El Astronaute and Mark Johnston's Desert Safari. However we did quite well from a placing perspective; the opening £38,655 Chesterfield Cup Handicap saw Roger Fell's Cockalorum finish third, the same position that Mark Johnston's largely unfancied Austrian Theory occupied in the following Vintage Stakes G2. The result of the day however came in the Goodwood Cup G1 (which saw the withdrawal of Stradivarius due to soft ground) where Mark Johnston's Sir Ron Priestley upheld family honour by finishing third. Unfortunately, in the process, Sir Ron Priestley seems to have aggravated the old injury that kept him out of action for the duration of last term, Franny Norton jumping off after the line, a potentially career terminating reoccurence. Meanwhile Michael & David Easterby and Les Eyre had a winner apiece at Beverley. Mick & David Easterby also had a winner on Perth's evening card.
24/07/2021 Our best results today came at York with David Barron's Venturous leading home Tim Easterby's Music Society (by a short head) and Richard Fahey's Blind Beggar when landing the £25,770 Sky Bet Dash Handicap. The next was the York Stakes G2 which saw Keven Ryan's Juan Elcano denied by just a head in second. Mark Johnston's Outside World was an impressive winner of the Novice Stakes and there was also a winner for David O'Meara. Karl Burke and John Quinn had winners at Newcastle and Mark Johnston took the last at Neemarket.
21/07/2021 This afternoon at Naas Karl Burke's Sophie's Star put up a decent performance to be third in the Marwell Stakes L. David O'Meara won the last at Lingfield whilst Catterick yielded a double for Karl Burke and wins for Ollie Pears, Kevin Ryan. Paul Midgley and Danny Brooke. Evening racing saw a winner for Tim Easterby at Leicester.
18/07/2021 Kevin Ryan's Atomic Force continues to go from strength to strength, comfortably landing the Prix Robert Papin G2 at Chantilly this afternoon. Meanwhile at Redcar (surely twinned with Chantilly !?) there was a double for Davi Barron as well as winners singular for Ed Bethell, David O'Meara, Tim Easterby, Karen Tutty and Nigel Tinkler.
17/07/2021 Not quite as manic as last weekend. Yorkshire's best result today, middle of July, actually came over hurdles with David O'Meara's Stonific winning the £18,484 Betway Summer Handicap at Market Rasen. Best of the Yorkshire runners in the £98,340 Weatherbys Super Sprint was the Karl Burke trained Guilded whose fourth place earned £11,800 for connections. Mark Johnston and Jedd O'Keeffe landed the opening two at Newmarket whilst at Ripon there were winners for Ed Bethell, Tim Easterby ( Dark Jedi in the £11,596 Ripon Bell-Ringer Handicap), Ruth Carr, Mick & David Easterby and Roger Fell. Evening racing at Doncaster saw David O'Meara land the opener, whilst at Haydock O'Meara scored again (with Turandot, homebred by Sir Robert Ogden) to cap a good day and Declan Carroll also saddled a winner.
10/07/2021 One of those days with some unusual jockey bookings due to the sheer volume of racing ! At York Tim Easterby took the Nursery and then his Winter Power landed the City Walls Stakes L with Ed Bethell's Moss Gill in second. Earlier Roger Fell's 40-1 shot Cockalorum was an excellent second in the £64,425 John Smith's Cup Handicap, with Jedd O'Keeffe's Strait Of Hormuz third, Fell having taken the opening race with La Trinidad. At Ascot Karl Burke's Significantly doubled-down on his Royal Ascot win when taking the £38,655 Betfred Heritage Handicap, Antony Brittain's Mondammej finishing a good third. At Chester John Quinn's Safe Voyage was an easy winner of the City Plate Stakes L and Mark Johnston also had a winner. Meanwhile at Newmarket Tim Easterby's Art Power was fourth in the July Cup G1, only a short head and a neck behind the second. Evening racing at Hamilton saw a double for Richard Fahey as well as wins for Bryan Smart and Philip Makin.
08/07/2021 Every silver lining has a cloud, Mark Johnston's Sir Ron Priestley bounced back to form on the opening day of Newmarket's July Meeting when bravely landing the Princess of Wales's Stakes G2 by a neck, but the trainer also announced that the winners half brother, Ascot Gold Cup G1 sensation Subjectivist (who incidentally is now ranked joint 4th on the Longines World Rankings), will be out of action for at least the rest of this term, following a filling in his right foreleg earlier this week, which could potentially lead to today's winner being pointed towards the Goodwood Cup. Earlier stablemate Dancing King was a decent third in the Bahrain Trophy G3, albeit defeating better-fancied stablemate, and major disappointment of the season, Gear Up, by over five lengths. Nigel Tinkler, Tim Easterby, Richard Fahey and Declan Carroll all scored at Carlisle, with Kevin Ryan, Roger Fell and David O'Meara doing likewise at Doncaster. Evening action saw David O'Meara take the last at Epsom
06/07/2021 David O'Meara's Agincourt (homebred by Sir Robert Ogden) was second in the Pipalong Stakes L at Ponty today, albeit beaten some ten lengths, Mark Johnston and Richard Fahey took the two opening races. Philip Makin had a winner at Wolves whilst evening racing at Uttoxeter yielded a Novice Chase win for Mick & David Easterby.
04/07/2021 John Quinn's Highfield Princess franked her Royal Ascot form by scoring at equally glamorous Chelmsford when landing the Queen Charlotte Fillies' Stakes L by a neck, Mark Johnston took the opener. At Ayr there were wins for David O'Meara, Declan Carroll and Philip Kirby whilst Micky Hammond had a winner at Market Rasen.
03/07/2021 Pride of place today goes to Brian Ellison's Tashkhan who landed the £51,540 bet365 Handicap at Haydock, David O'Meara took the opener and Bryan Smart the last. At Sandown Mark Johnston's Maydanny was a decent second in the £28,220 Coral Challenge Handicap, Adrian Nicholls took the opening seller at Leicester and there were locals winners at Beverley for John Quinn, Richard Fahey, Philip Makin and Mark Johnston. Evening racing at Carlisle sees a great treble for Tim Easterby with winners singular for Grant Tuer and Mark Johnston.
02/07/2021 Edward Bethell's nascent career continues to gather pace today when Fearby lands the Dragon Stakes L at Sandown by an impressive five lengths, Karl Burke's Kaboo is third. The next sees Mark Johnston's Mildenberger finish a slightly disappointing third in the Coral Marathon L. Paul Midgley and John Quinn win the last two at Doncaster. Evening racing yields winners at Beverley for David O'Meara, Mark Johnston, Karl Burke and Ollie Pears with Karl Burke, John Quinn and Jedd O'Keeffe all scoring at Haydock.
27/06/2021 Kevin Ryan and Richard Fahey had the opening and closing winners on Plate day at Newcastle, with Mark Johnston's Hochfeld performing best in the Pitmans Derby when second. Richard Fahey had a double at Chester, where Kevin Ryan also had a winner. At Newmarket Mark Johnston took the last whilst the Branton Court bred (but not retained) Desert Dreamer was second in the Empress Stakes L. Evening racing saw a winner for the very local Jessica Macey at Doncaster.
22/06/2021 John Quinn's Keep Busy bounced back to winning form today when taking the Land O'Burns Fillies' Stakes L at Ayr, with Paul Midgley's Mid Winster back in third. Mark Johnston had the only other Yorkshire winner at Ayr whilst Kevin Ryan, Tim Easterby, Nigel Tinkler, Harvey Bastiman, Michael & David Easterby and Richard Fahey all struck at Beverley.
20/06/2021 Kevin Ryan's Atomic Force stormed to a five length victory in the Prix du Bois G3 at Chantilly today to frank the good impression left by his prior Hamilton win. Pontefract saw a double for Karl Burke as well as wins for Roger Fell, David Barron, Mark Johnston and Tim Easterby. Brian Ellison and Tim Easterby get a winner apiece up at Hexham.
19/06/2021 No Royal Ascot winners today, but Tim Easterby's Art Power showed a return to form when a decent third in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes G1. Mark Johnston's Thunderous was fourth in the Hardwicke Stakes G2 whilst Richard Fahey's Rhythm Master occupied the same position in the Jersey Stakes G2, only a head out of third. The locals ruled at Redcar with doubles for Nigel Tinkler and Tim Easterby whilst Grant Tuer and Declan Carroll also got in on the winning action.
18/06/2021 It was looking like we might get a (winner) drought and (weather) flood on the same day at Royal Ascot today but in the end racing did go ahead and Karl Burke's Significantly took the closing £33,501 Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes Handicap by a head. In the previous race Mark Johnston's Zabeel Champion was third in the £35,100 Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap and Burke's Dandalla was a decent fourth in the Commonwealth Cup G1. Kevin Ryan had a last races double at Redcar (inc the Copgrove owned/bred Aunt Agatha in the last) where Tim Easterby, John Quinn and Philip Kirby also scored. Andy Crook and Sara Ender both had winners at Market Rasen. Kevin Ryan also had a winner on Newmarket's evening card.
17/06/2021 And boom ! That made up for yesterday, three Yorkshire winners at Royal Ascot today. Pride of place definitely goes to Mark Johnston's Subjectivist a convincing five length winner of the Gold Cup G1 ; the trainers fourth victory in this contest. With Dee Ex Bee and Nayef Road having finished runners-up to Stradivarius no less than five times between them, including twice in this and twice in the Goodwood Cup G1, it was revenge time and although Stradivarius did get trapped in he could only finish fourth in the end, so this was a more than fair renewal. I'm pretty sure it was Franny Norton wolf-whistling when the jockeys welcomed Subjectivist and Joe Fanning to the winners enclosure ; a rare accolade .... the jockey's ovation, rather than the Norton whistle ! The other group winner was Richard Fahey's Perfect Power who triumphed by a head in the Norfolk Stakes G2 with Bryan Smart's Project Dante running well a further nose back on third. To round out a good day John Quinn's Highfield Princess took the closing £33,501 Buckingham Palace Stakes Handicap by over a length, easing down. At Ripon meanwhile there were wins for Nigel Tinkler, Mark Johnston, David Barron, Peter Niven and Michael & David Easterby.
16/06/2021 No Yorkshire trained winners at Royal Ascot today, with Kevin Ryan's Boonie the only placed runner when third in the Windsor Castle Stakes L, however that race was won by the Theakston Stud bred Chipotle, so all was not lost ! Hamilton saw an opening race double for Mark Johnston whilst Grant Tuer took the last, Philip Kirby and Sue Smith both had wins over hurdles at Uttoxeter. Evening racing at Ripon sees doubles for both Tim Easterby and David O'Meara and a winner for Mark Johnston.
15/06/2021 Royal Ascot Day One could have been worse. Kevin Ryan's Juan Elcano ran well to land the Wolferton Stakes L , coming good again to run up to his two year old form. The Coventry Stakes G2 saw Roger Fell's Eldrickjones run a blinder to finish second with Richard Fahey's Vintage Clarets a neck back in third. David O'Meara's Lord Glitters was a decent fourth in the Queen Anne Stakes G1 whilst the freshly minted partnership of Michael & David Easterby had Elysian Flame run third in the Ascot Stakes. Tim Easterby had a double at Thirsk where Mark Johnston and Ann Duffield also had winners. Evening racing at Beverley saw wins for Les Eyre, Mark Johnston, Tim Easterby, Harvey Bastiman and Michael & David Easterby.
12/06/2021 Not quite as good at York today, David O'Meara's Makawee was third in the Grand Cup Stakes L and Roger Fell and John Quinn had the last two winners on the card. At Chester there were wins for Tim Easterby, Julie Camacho and Richard Fahey whilst Brian Ellison and Ben Haslam had winners under hunt rules at Hexham.
11/06/2021 The locals go through the card at York this afternoon with Richard Fahey's Space Traveller occupying pride of place for landing the Ganton Stakes L with David O'Meara's new recruit Azano in second. Julie Camacho's Shepherds Way takes the £17,523 EBF Supporting Racing With Pride Fillies' Handicap and there are also two additional winners for Richard Fahey as well as wins for Mark Johnston, Brian Ellison and Tim Easterby.
10/06/2021 Karl Burke's Lord Of The Lodge put up his best performance since his juvenile days this evening when second in the Ballycorus Stakes G3 at Leopardstown. Nottingham saw wins for Mark Johnston and Tim Easterby whilst evening racing at Haydock yielded a win for Les Eyre.
05/06/2021 Well the Derby ... happened .... it started quite well with Mark Johnston's King Frankel a nose second in the opening £25,770 World Pool At The tote Handicap .... we can skip the middle bits .... David O'Meara's Muscika, a youthful seven, was second by a neck in the closing £25,770 Cazoo Handicap. Just the one local winner at Doncaster, but at least Mark Johnston's Dancing King landed the opening £25,480 Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap, with stablemate Kondo Isami second. At Musselburgh Kevin Ryan's Huboor gained some valuable black type when third in the Maggie Dickson Stakes L and there were winners for Roger Fell, Mark Johnston and Harvey Bastiman. Ruth Jefferson had a winner over hurdles at Hexham and Mark Johnstno struck on Lingfield's evening card.
04/06/2021 Oaks Day at Epsom, but unfortunately Dubai Fountain failed to deliver. There was however a Yorkshire 1-2-3 in the closing £20,616 Cazoo Derby Day Festival with David O'Meara's Rhoscolyn coming home in front of stablemate Shelir and David Barron's On A Session. Earlier O'Meara's Hortzadar was second in the £25,770 Coral 'Beaten By A Length' Free Bet Handicap. Grant Tuer lands a double at Catterick where Karl Burke and Philip Kirby also have winners. Also coming home with double was Micky Hammond , his coming at Market Rasen. Ruth Carr lands the opener on Doncaster's evening card and Nigel Tinkler scored at Bath's evening meet. The rain at Epsom might help Gear Up's chances tomorrow somewhat ....
29/05/2021 The Achilles Stakes L at Haydock sees Ed Bethell's Moss Gill finish a neck second with Tim Easterby's Count d'Orsay in third. Adrian Nicholls had a winner later on the card. At Beverley the locals grabbed both the big two-year-old races; First up Kevin Ryan's Lady Ayresome headed a Yorkshire 1-2-3 in the £12,885 Hilary Needler Trophy whilst John Quinn's Tipperary Sunset took the £12,885 Two Year Old Trophy Conditions Stakes, Philip Kirby provided the only other Yorkshire winner on the Westwood. Tim Easterby landed the main race at Chester, Boardman triumphing in the £16,200 tote+ Pays You More At tote.co.uk Handicap, Mark Johnston took the last. Micky Hammond had Yorkshire's sole jumps winner at bucolic Cartmel. An in-form Tim Easterby landed a treble on Catterick's evening card, where Roger Fell, Grant Tuer and Geoff Harker also had wins.
22/05/2021 The Yorkshire run continued at Haydock with a 1-2-3 in the Temple Stakes G2 with John Quinn's Liberty Beach, on seasonal reappearance, leading all the way to prevail by a neck from Karl Burke's Ainsdale with fellow Spigot Lodge resident Lady In France third. Earlier Quinn's Frankenstella had landed the £10,260 Download The Casumo App Today Handicap, Richard Fahey's Umm Kulthum was third in the Sandy Lane Stakes G2 and stablemate Seasett was second, off bottom weight, in the £25,965 Silver Bowl Handicap and Adrian Nicholls took the last. Just the one winner at York, courtesy of Grant Tuer, but David O'Meara's Makawee was third in the Bronte Cup G3. O'Meara provided 'our' sole winner at Goodwod with bottom weighted Rhoscolyn taking the £25,770 Download The MansionBet app Handicap (... the imagination that goes into these race names ....).
21/05/2021 A Yorkshire clean sweep under heavy conditions in the Cecil Frail Stakes L at Haydock today with David O'Meara's Twilight Spinner running out the impressive six and a half length winner on only her third start, ahead of Richard Fahey's Ventura Diamond and Adrian Nicholls' Mamba Wamba. Unfortunately this represented Fahey's third consecutive runner-up of the day, albeit second in a listed race is probably somewhat easier to stomach ! Evening racing in the mud at Catterick saw Simon Whitaker chalk up his first winner since taking over from father Richard whilst there was a double for Tim Easterby and a win for Richard Fahey.
15/05/2021 A bad case of seconditis at Newbury with Karl Burke's Spycatcher (Carnarvon Stakes L) and the Mark Johnston duo of Thunderous and King Frankel (Aston Park Stakes G3 and London Gold Cup respectively) all occupying the runner-up berth. Unfortunately the trend didn't continue in the Lockinge Stakes G1 , although Lord Glitters was fourth for David O'Meara. At Newmarket Kevin Ryan's Bellissime was a decent third in the King Charles II Stakes L and Tim Easterby's Barney's Bay was also third in the £18,900 Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap. Winners for Karl Burke, Paul Midgley, Karen Tutty, David Barron and Kevin Ryan at Thirsk, whilst evening racing at Doncaster yields a double for Nigel Tinkler and wins for Richard Fahey and William Bethell.
14/05/2021 It's probably safe to say that the Dante meeting hasn't gone quite as hoped for from the perspective of Mark Johnston, almost evens favourite Sir Ron Priestly could only manage third in the Yorkshire Cup G2 today with also fancied stablemate Nayef Road fifth (aka last), Tim Easterby's Wells Farhh Go (who had been off course for 587 days) split the pair although he finished over nine lengths behind and eight lengths ahead. Johnston did however take the last with further wins for Tim Easterby and Les Eyre and there was an eye-catching debut for Kevin Ryan's Mas Poder, fourth (by a neck) in the Marygate Stakes L. Evening racing at Hamilton yields winners for John Quinn, Mick Easterby, Tim Easterby and Grant Tuer.
13/05/2021 Could have gone better, Yorkshire's best Derby hope for some time, Mark Johnston's Gear Up, was poor on his seasonal reapperance in the Dante Stakes G2 at York today only managing fifth. Still ..... if it rains ..... The Westow Stakes L was more to my liking with Tim Easterby's Winter Power landing the spoils by an impressive three lengths with Kevin Ryan's Dexter Belle also running well to be third .... although hot favourite Acklam Express was plumb last. Also at the Knavesmire David Barron stalwart Kynren took the £15,462 Hambleton Handicap and Tim Easterby's Copper Knight the £12,885 Matchbook Betting Exchange Handicap.
12/05/2021 A bit of a wipe out, major race wise, on the opening day of the Dante meeting at York, which was a little depressing especially as Yorkshire fielded seven of the twelve runners in the Duke of York Stakes G2. For the record 'our' highest finisher was David O'Meara's ever-dependable Summerghand in fourth. We did OK on the undercard though with Richard Fahey landing the £12,885 Churchill Tyres Handicap with Mr Lupton, a day after reaching the epic milestone of 3,000 winners. Adrian Keatley and Bryan Smart also scored later on the card .
08/05/2021 The Kilvington Stakes L at Nottingham today saw a Yorkshire 2-3 with Kevin Ryan's Last Empire in second and Richard Fahey's Ventura Diamond third, with Team Fahey also getting a winner later on the card. No winners at Ascot but David O'Meara's Escobar was third in the £38,655 Victoria Cup with Richard Fahey's Zip fourth. At Haydock's mixed meeting Brian Ellison's Cormier was second in the Swinton Handicap Hurdle Gd3 and there was a flat winner for Tim Easterby who also had a double under hunt rules at Hexham. Eveniung racing at Thirsk yielded yet another winner for Tim Easterby as well as wins for Adrian Nicholls and David Griffiths.
07/05/2021 Today at Chester Yorkshire's best finisher in the £64,425 Chester Cup was Mark Johnston's Hochfeld in third whilt the sole winner was John Quinn's seasoned performer El Astronaute. Andy Crook had a winner over hurdles at Market Rasen. Evening racing at Nottingham saw a winner for Tim Easterby who doubled up at Ripon where uncle Mick Easterby had a double and David O'Meara also scored.
06/05/2021 No representation in the main races at Chester today but Richard Fahey's Master Zoffany took the £10,308 Deepbridge Estate Planning Service Handicap and there were supporting winners for David Barron and Mark Johnston with the later also striking at Chelmsford.
05/05/2021 A good start to Chester with Mark Johnston's Dubai Fountain a comfortable winner of the Cheshire Oaks L, she now goes straight to Epsom. Tim Easterby took the £10,308 tote+ At tote.co.uk Handicap with Showalong (with Declan Carroll's First Company in second) whilst Tony Coyle also struck ; his first winner of the season, albeit he's only had thirteen runners thus far. Sue Smith had a double at Kelso, including the Class 3 feature and Henry Hogarth also had a winner.
02/05/2021 Richard Fahey was fairly confident that Fev Rover would put up a good performance in the 1,000 Guineas G1 today, but the 22-1 odds would imply that general opinion was against him. In the end she ran a blinder to finish third, only a neck out of second. Earlier at HQ Mark Johnston's Zabeel Champion had landed the £18,039 Back and Lay On Betfair Exchange Handicap. At Hamilton Mark Johnston won the £15,462 Buttonhook Handicap for the umpteenth time with The Trader, top-weighted stablemate Hochfeld was second, David O'Meara landed the opener and Kevin Ryan's Ben Macdui was third in the £18,039 Tangerine Trees Conditions Stakes.
01/05/2021 Guineas Day, but no Yorkshire runners in the main event (at least that is remedied tomorrow). Yorkshire did manage to win the main supporting race though with Mark Johnston's Sir Ron Priestley putting up a strong performance to land the Jockey Club Stakes G2 with stablemate Thunderous improving from his last run to finish a good third. Earlier Kevin Ryan's Emaraaty Ana came off worst in a blanket finish to get third by two necks in the Palace House Stakes G3 whilst Johnston's Maydanny was second in the £18,039 Suffolk Handicap. Another close finish at Goodwood saw David O'Meara's Agincourt (homebred by Sir Robert Ogden) go down by a nose in the final stride when second in the Conqueror Fillies' Stakes L whilst Mark Johnston's Desert Safari took the £12,885 Download The MansionBet App Handicap. Cliff Stud sponsored the whole card at Thirsk on Hunt Cup Day, to their great credit and whilst there was no joy in the main event Tim Easterby, Jedd O'Keeffe, Ollie Pears and Brian Ellison did all score on the undercard. Mark Johnston and Roger Fell took the opening two races on Doncaster's evening card, and Philip Kirby took the last, whilst Mark Walford had a winner at Hexham where the last race was declared void.
30/04/2021 A decent day at Goodwood with Mark Johnston's Qaader landing the £13,500 EBF Conditions Stakes and David O'Meara's Makawee second in the Daisy Warwick Fillies' Stakes L. Musselburgh sees winners for Bryan Smart and Tim Easterby and a double in the last two for Richard Fahey. Evening racing at Newcastle yields another winner for Richard Fahey as well as for Jessica Macey whilst Gillian Walford lands a Hunter Chase at Cheltenham.
28/04/2021 Not too bad at Ascot today (didn't this used to be an evening meeting ?!?) with third places in both Group 3 races ; Mark Johnston's Nayef Road not toooo far behind the mighty Stradivarius in the Sagaro Stakes G3 and Karl Burke's Spycatcher a decent third in the Pavilion Stakes G3 (I can't bring myself to type out "Qipco British Champions Series horseracinghof.com Pavilion Stakes (Commonwealth Cup Trial)" .... oh, hang on, I did). In addition Johnston's The Gatekeeper was a promising second in the Royal Ascot Two-Year-Old Trial Conditions Stakes. On home soil at Ponty there was a double for David O'Meara and wins for Ruth Carr, Kevin Ryan and Mark Johnston whilst Micky Hammond, David O'Meara and Grant Tuer all scored at Wolverhampton. Mark Johnston had a double on Chelmsford's evening card.
27/04/2021 Some worthwhile trips to Nottingham today with Mark Johnston's Freyja adding to her CV when a neck second in the Nottinghamshire Oaks L and wins for her stablemate Hochfeld and Kevin Ryan's Fighter Pilot. Lot's of evening racing saw a double for Richard Fahey at Ayr where Grant Tuer and David O'Meara also had winners whilst Mark Johnston scored at Yarmouth.
19/04/2021 John Dance, owner of Laurens, announced that he was the purchaser of Manor House Stud . The plan is to develop the property to provide a) a base for his yearlings and b) a private training yard to be headed up by James Horton, currently assistant to Sir Michael Stoute. Sounds exciting although I'm sure Dance also bought Fair Winter Farm, and last time I passed by it seemed to be have overrun with ..... alpacas. Winners at Pontefract for Roger Fell, Antony Brittain, Philip Kirby, Kevin Ryan and Paul Midgley. Over jumps Sue Smith, Jedd O'Keeffe and Micky Hammond all had winners at Hexham whilst Mark Walford and Sam England did likewise at Market Rasen.
18/04/2021 On the Scottish Grand National card at Ayr today Peter Niven's Malystic was second in the Future Champion Novices' Chase Gd2 with Philip Kirby's Whoshotthesherriff in third, Mark Walford had a winner later on the card.
16/04/2021 At Newbury Mick Easterby's Elysian Flame landed the £18,039 Compton Beauchamp Estates Ltd Silver Bar Handicap (with Mark Johnston's Rochester House back in third). Up at Ayr Brian Ellison's Nietzsche took the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase L by a neck. The Racing Post reports that the Craven Breeze-Up Sales purchasing charts were topped by Middleham's own Manor House Stud, which was sold last year to an as-yet unidentified buyer. The stud signed for eight lots totalling 1.035m guineas including sons of Kingman and Churchill for 335,000gns and 135,000gns respectively and a daughter of Iffraaj for 110,000gns.
15/04/2021 Even better today at the Craven Meeting with David O'Meara's Summerghand running on well to land the Abernant Stakes G3, with Kevin Ryan's Emaraaty Ana back in third, only a head off second. Karl Burke's Significantly had earlier finished runner-up in the second race on the card. The locals took all but one of the races at Ripon courtesy of Richard Fahey, Sam England, Mark Johnston, Ed Bethell, Adrian Nicholls and Roger Fell. Evening racing at Newcastle sees a double for first-season-trainer Ed Bethell (making it three for the day and four from his last six runners!) as well as a winner for Nigel Tinkler.
14/04/2021 Ah, the Craven Meeting at Newmarket, which southerners claim is the true start of the Flat Turf Season. Hhhhhmm. Anyway, a good start with the opening race won by a colt bred by Steve Parkin's nascent Branton Court Stud. Mark Johnston's Marie's Diamond ran well to be second in the Earl Of Sefton Stakes G3. Closer to home there were local winners at Beverley for Richard Fahey (a double), Kevin Ryan, Mark Johnston, Harvey Bastiman (his first winner since taking over from sister Rebecca), David O'Meara and Mick Easterby. Evening racing at Kempton saw Richard Fahey land a double double and Mark Johnston also had a winner.
08/04/2021 Day One of the Aintree Festival saw no Yorkshire winners and Waiting Patiently doing just that .... when pulled up. However Sally Hall's homebred Miss Lamb, trained by Jedd O'Keeffe was a decent third in the (deep breath) Goffs UK Nickel Coin Mares' Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race Gd2. On the level Southwell saw a double for Mark Johnston and winners for Kevin Ryan, David Barron, Karl Burke and Roger Fell.
07/04/2021 The busiest day of the nascent flat season so far with four meetings. At Nottingham Mark Johnston's Sir Ron Priestley, off the track for 577 days and last seen finishing second in the St Leger G1 of 2019, made a return to the track to tidily land the Further Flight Stakes L , the stable then took the last race as well. Catterick saw wins for Nigel Tinkler, Kevin Ryan, David O'Meara, Tim Easterby and Philip Kirby, there was no joy at Lingfield. Evening racing at Newcastle yielded a fantastic treble for Grant Tuer and a win singular for Jedd O'Keeffe.
03/04/2021 An excellent day at Musselburgh for Mark Johnston who landed four of the first five races including Themaxwecan in the £38,655 Queen's Cup Heritage Handicap (stablemate Hochfeld in third) and Naamoos in the £15,462 Royal Mile Handicap (stablemate Forest Falcon in second). David Barron's Zarzni was a good short head second in the £15,462 Scottish Sprint Cup Handicap. At Haydock Sue Smith's Small Present took home £18,004 in the snappily named Betway Challenger Stayers Hurdle Seriesl Final Handicap Hurdle. Evening racing saw Wolverhampton wins for Antony Brittain and Philip Kirby.

Newcastle meanwhile saw a double for Kevin Ryan and wins for Mark Johnston and Roger Fell.
27/03/2021 Dubai started well with Mark Johnston's Subjectivist laying out his Champion Stayer credentials early in the season with a fantastic display to land the Dubai Gold Cup G2, always in the front two he then forged ahead under Joe Fanning with over five furlongs left to run and eventually won by nearly six lengths, in course record time. Later on the card Nigel Tinkler's Acklam Express was only beaten out of second by a neck when third in the Al Quoz Sprint G1, picking up £72,992 for his efforts. David O'Meara's standard bearer Lord Glitters could 'only' manage sixth in the Dubai Turf G1, but such was the prize money on offer he still took home £58,394. Doncaster saw the start of the domestic turf season, the locals only had one winner with first-season trainer Ed Bethell landing the £23,193 Spring Mile Handicap with Artistic Rifles. David O'Meara's Hortzadar was a decent third in the £51,540 Lincoln Handicap , whilst the Cammidge Trophy L saw some old favourites with Kevin Ryan's Emaraaty Ana second, Kevin Ryan's Brando third and David O'Meara's Summerghand fourth. 21/03/2021 Wetherby trainer Rebecca Bastiman has passed away at the age of 40 after a long illness. Mick Easterby had a winner at Carlisle.

13/03/2021 A good day at Wolverhampton for Karl Burke with Born To Be Alive landing the £18,675 Lincoln Trial Handicap (with David Barron's new recruit On A Session in second) and Lord Of The Lodge second in the Lady Wulfruna Stakes L. Richard Fahey took the opener whilst Mark Walford had a winner at Ayr.
06/03/2021 Well that didn't take long. Early March and Yorkshire already has it's first Group One winner courtesy of David O'Meara stalwart Lord Glitters landing the Jebel Hatta G1, almost last to first, at Meydan this afternoon at the ripe old age of eight. He's now closing in rapidly on Laurens who is fourth placed in the Yorkshire all-time winningmost list ! Nigel Tinkler's Acklam Express also put up a sterling performance in Dubai, finishing third in the Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint G3. Closer to home another old-timer was in fine form at Lingfield, eight-year-old Ornate landing the £11,972 Betway Handicap for David Griffiths. Sue Smith had a winner at Doncaster and John Quinn likewise at Kelso. Philip Kirby and Ruth Carr score on Southwell's evening card. Yesterday it was announced that the former David Barron trained Group winning sprinter Pearl Secret would be relocating to Norton Grove Stud, a valuable addition indeed to the somewhat depleted Yorkshire stallion ranks, not to mention a very useful outcross for many mares.
27/02/2021 A good day under both codes today. At Newcastle Brian Ellison's Sam's Adventure followed up on his Tommy Whittle win in December when taking the £43,792 Eider Handicap Chase nicely , Micky Hammond took the Conditional Jock's handicap hurdle later on the card. It was a Yorkshire 1-2 in the Hever Sprint Stakes L at Lingfield with John Quinn's Lord Riddiford hanging on by a neck from Edward Bethell's (getting his first bit of black type) Moss Gill, David Griffiths' Ornate was fourth.
20/02/2021 Mark Johnston's Mildenberger might have finished 'only' sixth in the £1m Red Sea Turf Handicap at Riyadh, but still picked up £36,496 for his efforts. At Haydock Brian Ellison's Tupelo Mississippi was third in the Albert Bartlett Prestige Novices' Hurdle Gd2 and there was a winner for Philip Kirby. Winners at Newcastle were provided by William Bethell, Richard Fahey, Mark Johnston and Peter Niven.
18/02/2021 Nigel Tinkler's Acklam Express put up the performance of his (short) career to date when second, at 20-1, in the Meydan Sprint G2 at, erm, Meydan. Mark Johnston had a winner at Chelmsford.

06/02/2021 Wetherby is cancelled , Karl Burke's largely unheralded Exalted Angel landed the Kachy Stakes L at Lingfield today at 20-1. Pat Buckley, formerly first jockey to Captain Neville Crump in Middleham died this week at the age of 77. He won the Grand National in '63 (albeit not for Crump) as well as numerous other top races including the Whitbread Gold Cup and Scottish Grand National. After his Yorkshire based career in the saddle he was instrumental in setting up racing industries in Oman and Abu Dhabi, and was then heavily involved in setting up the Dubai World Cup.
23/01/2021 Ruth Jefferson's Waiting Patiently was arguably a little disappointing when 'only' third in the Clarence House Chase Gd1 at Ascot, but still a Grade One placing isn't to be sneezed at and it bodes well for the future. Patrick Haslam had a winner over fences at Haydock at and then doubled up on the all-weather flat at Newcastle where Phil Kirby, Alan Brown and Mark Johnston had winners and Antony Brittain landed a double.
21/01/2021 The moneyspinner that is Lord Glitters registered his first win since June 2019 when landing the Singspiel Stakes G2 for David O'Meara at Meydan today, coming home clear by a comfortable three lengths.
