11/10/2024 | Quality action at Newmarket and York today. The local highlight at York came from Ed Bethell's progressive Minstrel Knight, who stayed on well to land the £51,540 Wm Hill Finale Heritage Handicap with Tim Easterby's Filibustering back in second. John & Sean Quinn's reliable servant Empirestateofmind took the £15,462 Wm Hill Top Price Guarantee Autumn Handicap, Kevin Ryan, Tim Easterby and Harriet Bethell supplied the under card local winners. Not much joy at Newmarket but Charlie Johnston's Francophone was fourth in the Pride Stakes G3.
06/10/2024 | No joy on Arc day with Karl Burke's Fallen Angel, a short neck fourth in the Prix de l'Opera G1, putting up the best performance whilst stablemate Poet Master was fifth in the Prix de la Foret G1, albeit only a short neck and a neck off third.
05/10/2024 | A busy day ; with top class action at Ascot, Newmarket, Redcar and Longchamp (although no representation at the later, more Yorkshire interest tomorrow). At Ascot Karl Burke's Al Qareem justified favouritism to take the Cumberland Lodge Stakes G3 by 2 lengths, he's definitely better with 'soft' (or 'heavy'!) somehwere in the going description. The £92,772 BetMGM Challenge Cup was an easy win for Kevin Ryan's Volterra, with David O'Meara's old-timer Bopedro back in third, only a head out of second. Karl Burke's Beautiful Diamond was second in the Rous Stakes L and Ed Bethell's Elim third in the October Stakes L whilst Richard Fahey's Vintage Clarets and Kevin Ryan's Venture Capital occupied the placings in the £23,193 Berkshire Healthcare Charity Handicap. In the week in which stable star Symbol of Strength was sold to race abroad Adrian Keatley had some compensation at Redcar with Francisco's Piece picking up £32,250 for second in the Wm Hill Two Year Old Trophy L. Later on the card Richard Fahey's Ramazan was third in the Guisborough Stakes L and Ed Bethell's Naepoint led home a Yorkshire clean sweep in the £20,616 Woodsmith Construction Group Straight-Mile Final Handicap, supporting winners were provided by Karl Burke, John Wainwright (three winners from his last six runners, having only had one winner this year prior this streak!) and Charlie Johnston. Ed Bethell had a winner on Southwell's evening card.
28/09/2024 | Better today at Newmarket with Karl Burke's Liberty Lane taking the lead early when winning the £90,195 Cambridgeshire Handicap, with Ed Bethell's James McHenry picking up £42,297 for a decent second place, David O'Meara's Bennetot was fourth. Earlier Charle Johnston's Dash Dizzy was an odds (40-1) defying third in the Middle Park Stakes G1 which bodes well for next season. Haydock saw Adrian Keatley's Flying Finn, listed placed earlier this year, land the £19,585 Sky Bet For The Fans Handicap, before another good result for Gemma Tutty with Blue Storm holding on by a head to win the £30,924 My Pension Expert Handicap, in which David O'Meara's Aberama Gold was third, Karl Burke had winner later on the card. At Ripon John & Sean Quinn's Eye of Dubai led home a local 1-2-3 in the £20,616 Ripon Cathedral City Of The Dales Handicap a neck ahead of Bryan Smart's Secret Guest with Ben Haslam's redoubtable servant Fortamour third. Other winners on the card came from Tim Easterby, Anthony Brittain and Karl Burke.
27/09/2024 | Karl Burke's Serving With Style puts up the best Yorkshire performance at Newmarket today when a decent second in the Rockfel Stakes G2, later stablemate Aimeric is third in the Godolphin Stakes L. Yorkshire winners at Haydock come from John Wainwright, Karl Burke and Ed Bethell whilst Ruth Carr has a winner on Wolverhampton's evening card.
26/09/2024 | Another good trip for Grant Tuer ! This time to Newmarket where Sophia's Starlight landed the £25,770 British Stallion Studs EBF Premier Fillies' Handicap by a neck. A curtailed Pontefract saws winners for Julie Camacho and Charlie Johnston and Ruth Jefferson had a winner at Perth. Evening racing at Southwell yielded wins for Kevin Ryan and Julie Camacho.
25/09/2024 | A profitable trip to Goodwood for Grant Tuer with Love Talk easily taking the £50,960 British EBF £100,000 2yo Fillies' Series Final, David O'Meara had a winner earlier on the card. There were winners at Redcar for Craig Lidster, Mick & David Easterby, Charlie Johnston, Tony Coyle & Kaine Wood, Richard Fahey and Geoff Oldroyd with Charlie Johnston also scoring on Kempton's evening card.
21/09/2024 | A very busy day. Where to start ... how about an unbeaten group two winning juvenille ... at Newbury Richard Fahey's Powerful Glory confirmed the promise of his debut when landing the Mill Reef Stakes G2 by a neck, the Theakston Stud bred Billboard Star finishing third. The trainer believes this is a really top class colt and this will be his final run of the season. Earlier Ed Bethell's Chillingham was second in the £36,078 Autumn Cup Handicap, with Karl Burke's Bolster occupying the same position in the £38,655 Dubai Duty Free Handicap ... speaking of Karl Burke ... at Ayr he, somewhat incredibly, saddled the first three home in the £92,772 Ayr Gold Cup with the Southwood Farm bred Lethal Levi coming home ahead of stablemates Silky Wilkie and Korker. Earlier Craig Lidster's flag-bearer Alfa Kellenic took the £33,501 Ayr Silver Cup, with Kevin Ryan's Bergerac in third. Adrian Nicholls' Maw Lam was only denied by a neck when second in the Firth of Clyde Stakes G3. David O'Meara, Julie Camacho and Adrian Keatley won the last three races on the card. Over at Chantilly Charlie Johnston landed his first group win of the season with Lazy Griff victorious in the Prix de Conde G3 by a neck. Chester marked the final outing for the redoubtable Franny Norton who subsequently delivered, landing three winners including the finale, the £10,192 Farewell To Franny Norton Handicap, appropriately aboard the Charlie Johnston trained Qitaal, Tim Easterby and Richard Fahey also had winners. David O'Meara had a winner at Wolverhampton.
20/09/2024 | It's the second day of the Ayr Gold Cup Festival and things start to hot up in terms of race quality. David O'Meara's Star Of Lady M runs on well to land the Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies' Stakes L, Richard Fahey's Uncle Don is a good second in the Harry Rosebery Stakes L and Mick & David Easterby's Diligent Resdev lands the £18,039 Ayr Bronze Cup.
15/09/2024 | There were actually Leger meeting winners at Donnie today courtesy of Kevin Ryan (Venture Capital in the £18,900 Pertemps Network Handicap), Richard Fahey and John & Sean Quinn but arguably the most significant results came in defeat with Ed Bethell's Elim a length second in the Sceptre Fillies' Stakes G3 and Richard Fahey's Golden Mind beaten a neck in the £33,501 City of Doncaster Handicap. Musselburgh saw a double for David & Nicola Barron with further winners supplied by Tim Easterby, Grant Tuer, Mark Johnston and Roger Fell & Sean Murray.
14/09/2024 | It might have been St Leger day on local soil but, really, the Yorkshire top-class action today was concentrated on Leopardstown. The Branton Court Stud bred (but now sold) and Karl Burke trained Fallen Angel kicked off proceedings when putting up a strong performance on her reappearance to finish a gallant second in the Matron Stakes G1 to, arguably, the best filly in the Europe in the shape of Porta Fortuna. Next on the card was the Irish Champion Stakes G1 where the Copgrove Stud bred Economics was expected to finally confirm his considerable talents at the very highest level which he duly did when, after a less than perfect run, he came home a hard fought neck in front of non other than Auguste Rodin, a six times group one winner, including last years Derby. As Copgrove and Branton Court are adjacent to each other this was a fanstastic 45 minutes for one particular corner of Yorkshire ! Later on the card Richard Fahey's Garfield Shadow was third, ahead of Julie Camacho's Havana Blue in the Sovereign Path Premier Handicap. At Chester Karl Burke's Al Qareem, so often the bridesmaid, got his just rewards for a good season when landing the Stand Cup Stakes L and Brian Ellison's Tashkan was a good third in the £50,960 Watergate Cup and there were winners for Declan Carroll and David O'Meara (Stressfree in the £20,384 Virgin Bet Handicap). No winners again at Doncaster but John & Sean Quinn's JM Jungle was third in the £51,540 Portland Handicap, Karl Burke's Liberty Lane was second in the £36,078 PJ Towey Construction Handicap and David O'Meara's Bopedro second in the £36,078 Cepac 25th Year Anniversary Handicap. Karl Burke and Bryan Smart had winners at Musselburgh.
13/09/2024 | No winners again for the locals at the Leger meeting, Ed Bethell's Cabrera is a short head second in the £33,501 EBF Premier Fillies' Handicap, whist the Hellwood Stud (jointly) bred Tropical Storm is fourth in the Flying Childers Stakes G2. There is a Yorkshire winner at Chester courtesy of Charlie Johnston whilst David O'Meara struck at Sandown. Tomorrow is potentially at massive day for Yorkshire .... albeit in Ireland ....
12/09/2024 | A quiet Day One at Doncaster's Leger Meeting, the best local result coming from Ed Bethell's Oolong Poobong when a neck second in the £28,347 EBF Fillies' Nursery Handicap.Bethell, Kevin Ryan and Antony Brittain had a winner apiece on Newcastle's evening card.
08/09/2024 | Winners at York for Nigel Tinkler, Brian Ellison and David O'Meara whilst the Garrowby Stakes L sees the Hellwood Stud (jointly) bred Purosangue finish in second with the Karl Burke trained Korker in third.
07/09/2024 | A busy day sees no joy in the Sprint Cup at Haydock but Karl Burke's Holloway Boy takes the Superior Mile G3 and David O'Meara's Epic Poet the £51,540 Old Borough Cup Handicap. David & Nicola Barron's Jer Batt is second in the £25,770 Be Friendly Handicap and Julie Camacho takes the last. At Kempton Adrian Keatley lands his first group winner since relocating from Ireland when Symbol of Strength lands the Sirenia Stakes G3. No winners at Ascot but David O'Meara's Akkadian Thunder is second in the £41,232 bet365 Handicap whilst Richard Fahey's Brooklyn Nine Nine occupies the same position in the £18,900 tote.co.uk Handicap. Locally Thirsk sees winners for Bryan Smart, David O'Meara, Ed Bethell, Charlie Johnston, Tim Easterby and Julie Camacho whilst Ruth Carr had a winner on Wolverhampton's evening card.
01/09/2024 | Result of the day happens at Longchamp where Karl Burke's Kaadi was second in the Prix d'Arenberg G3. Mick & David Easterby made the trip to Brighton for a winner.
31/08/2024 | Another day where the main news was off track in that the Branton Court Stud bred and owned, and Karl Burke trained, Fallen Angel a winner of two Group One's to date, will not be returning to the Branton Court paddocks after her racing career, as she has been sold to Wathnan Racing, presumably for a huge amount of money .... because otherwise why deny yourself the chance of breeding from your own homebred dual group one winner, no matter how many close relatives you still owned !? On track Paul Midgley, Tim Easterby, Charlie Johnston, Julie Camacho and Mick & David Easterby all had winners at Beverley, although no local joy in the Beverley Bullet L ... although more than one runner might have helped ! Craig Lidster had a decent winner at Chester and the best result at Sandown was the Karl Burke trained Tiger Mask, fourth in the Solario Stakes G3.
29/08/2024 | The finale of the 'Racing League' at Southwell sees Brian Ellison's Northern Spirit land the £18,039 Tote.co.uk Live On The Racing App Racing League R38 Handicap and Nigel Tinkler's Muker a short head second in the closing £38,655 Tote.co.uk Big Finale Racing League R42 Handicap. And Yorkshire finish plumb last in the league ... by quite some way (although half the 'North' trainers were actually Yorkshire based ... and one of the Yorkshire trainers was Newmarket based !). Harriet Bethell, Adrian Keatley, Ollie Pears, Richard Fahey and Tim Easterby had earlier all scored at Carlisle whilst David & Nicola Barron did likewise at Chelmsford.
27/08/2024 | Not much of note to report 'on track' today but in the ring at Donnie a Sarah Fanning consigned, Southwood Farm bred, Havana Grey filly was the top lot, at £240,000, on the opening day of the Goffs UK Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale. Descending from the Knox's foundation mare Miss Mercy she is, by some way, their biggest sales ring success, albeit they are no strangers to breeding horses who perform well on the track. To top a good day Sarah Fanning had also earlier consigned a A'Ali filly for £130,000 ! For the record Philip Makin, Tim Easterby and Grant Tuer had winners at Musselburgh, with Tuer doubling up at Ripon where Alan Brown also scored. Joe Fanning had four rides at Musselburgh, but no winners, so drinks on Sarah perhaps ... !
26/08/2024 | Ripon's traditional Bank Holiday meeting sees Richard Fahey's Mearall finish third in the Ripon Champion Two Yrs Old Trophy L, although there was clearly something amiss with better fancied stablemate Shadow Army who was last. Tim Easterby's Barley was second in the Ripon Rowels whilst Bryan Smart and Ruth Carr provided under card winners. Nigel Tinkler had a winner at Chepstow with Craig Lidster, Mick & David Easterby, Bryan Smart and Tom Tate all scored at Southwell.
25/08/2024 | Karl Burke's soft ground specialist Spycatcher bounced back to form today at a 'very soft' Deauville when landing the Prix de Meautry G3 by a short neck. Over at Naas the Sir Robert Ogden bred Firebird was a head second in the Ballyogan Stakes G3. There were some valuable wins at Goodwood with David O'Meara debutante Estrange taking the £25,770 Darley EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes by over five lengths and Kevin Ryan's money-spinner Sergeant Wilko coming home a head in front in the £23,193 Wm Hill First Race Special Today Handicap. Locally Charlie Johnston, Mick & David Easterby and Ed Bethell all had winners at Beverley.
24/08/2024 | The final day of the Ebor meeting sees John & Sean Quinn's Breege achieve a career best when keeping on strongly to land the valuable (they are trying to make it a Group One!) City Of York Stakes G2. In the Ebor itself Adrian Keatley went 'old school' in running Kihavah over hurdles last time out, and it almost paid off but connections had to settle for a mere £89,950 for second place, David O'Meara's Epic Poet was fourth. Richard Fahey's Strike Red was a good second in the £51,540 Sky Bet Constantine Heritage Handicap whilst the Hellwood Stud (jointly) bred Tropical Storm landed the Roses Stakes L by a neck. At Goodwood Karl Burke's Ice Max put up easily the best performance of his career when landing the Celebration Mile G2 nicely, Burke having also taken the opener. Ben Haslam and Sue Smith had a winner apiece at Cartmel. Evening racing at Windsor saw Karl Burke's Aimeric finish third in the August Stakes L whilst Grant Tuer, Karl Burke, Ed Bethell, David O'Meara, Seb Spencer, Peter Niven and Paul Midgely ensured a Yorkshire clean sweep at Redcar.
23/08/2024 | The Ebor meeting winning streak is broken, but still some good placings today. Chronologically Kevin Ryan's Dark Moon Rising was a decent third in the £61,868 Sky Bet Heritage Handicap, whilst Adrian Keatley's Symbol Of Strength, allowed to start at 80-1, was third, only a head out of second, in the Gimcrack Stakes G2. For the third day in a row the highest placed Yorkshire trained runner in the Group One finished sixth, this time Kevin Ryan's Washington Heights in the Nunthorpe Stakes G1, but the Branton Court Stud bred Starlust was a head third. Finally Kevin Ryan's Volterra was second in the closing £51,540 Sky Bet Mile Heritage Handicap. Evening racing at Hamilton yielded no joy in the Lanark Silver Bell, but there was a winner for Karl Burke.
22/08/2024 | Day two of the Ebor meeting looked not dissimilar to day one from a Yorkshire perspective. In the £77,310 Clipper Heritage Handicap the sponsors Thunder Run, trained by Karl Burke, led home a Yorkshire clean sweep with David O'Meara's Mirsky and Karl Burke's Holloway Boy occupying the minor placings. At close of play Craig Lidster's admirable Alfa Kellenic made it five wins in a row when landing the £51,540 British EBF Fillies' Heritage Handicap. Karl Burke's Leovanni, under a three pound penalty for her Royal Ascot victory, was a game third in the Lowther Stakes G2 and there was another Yorkshire sixth in the feature race, this time David O'Meara's Lava Stream in the Yorkshire Oaks G1. Karl Burke's Karmology was second in the Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes L, stablemate Qaseem was third in the Nursery and Kevin Ryan's Jorge Alvares picked up £24,950 for fourth in the Goffs Premier Yearling Stakes. Jedd O'Keeffe made the long trip to Newton Abbot worthwhile by landing the card's feature race with Fringill Dike.
21/08/2024 | The meeting of the year for Yorkshire folk started today and whilst there wasn't much joy in the stakes races on day one of the Ebor Meeting at York it was almost a clean sweep in the 'caps. First up John & Sean Quinn's JM Jungle landed the opening £61,848 Symphony Group Heritage Handicap, with Karl Burke's Looking For Lynda close up in third. Burke's Royal Rhyme was only sixth in the Juddmonte International G1, but still puts £16,875 into the bank, connections might be wishing it was run on the Thursday as presumably it's going to be softer. Ed Bethell's Quantum Leap was fourth in the Stayers Heritage Handicap before David O'Meara's Star Of Lady M easily landed the £51,540 Visit Irish Yearling Sale With ITM Fillies' Heritage Handicap. The last was the £51,540 Sky Bet Nursery Handicap in which Richard Fahey's Yes I'm Mali prevailed by a neck from Karl Burke's Artagnan. Carlisle yielded a Kevin Ryan double and winners for Ed Bethell, Bryan Smart, Ollie Pears and Tim Easterby.
18/08/2024 | Another good day for Richard Fahey, this time at Pontefract, with Marine Wave landing the EBF Sky Bet Sunday Series Flying Fillies' Stakes L and debutante Powerful Glory putting up an eyecatching display in the maiden. There were also winners for David O'Meara, Ed Bethell and Julie Camacho whilst at Southwell Roger Fell & Sean Murray and Karl Burke both had wins. Over at Deauville Karl Burke's Arabie (bred at Copgrove Hall Stud by Robert Cornelius) was a reasonable fourth in the Prix Morny G1 although stablemate Shareholder finished last.
17/08/2024 | Ripon's biggest race of the season, the £51,540 Great St Wilfrid Handicap, sees all the placings occupied by local horses with the Richard Fahey duo of Dare To Hope and Ramazan finishing first and second ahead of Bryan Smart's Secret Guest. Mark Walford and Paul Midgley (Grant Wood in the £12,885 'Consolation' Trophy) land supporting races. At Newbury Karl Burke's Lethal Levi's (bred at Southwood Farm) money spinning season continues with a win in the £25,770 TPT Fire Handicap whilst stablemate Al Qareem runs his usual good race to be second in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes G3. Newmarket sees Ed Bethell's Cabrera finish a decent second in the £25,770 Jenningsbet Fillies' Handicap. Patrick Neville lands a double at Perth and Philip Kirby and Danny Brooke have winners at Market Rasen. John & Sean Quinn and David O'Meara have a winner apiece at Doncaster. Meanwhile at Deauville Charlie Johnston's Lazy Griff picks up £16,956 for third in the Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage L and Grant Tuer's Love Talk is a very respectable fourth in the Prix du Calvados G2.
16/08/2024 | Karl Burke's Kaadi was a neck second in the St.Hugh's Stakes L at Newbury this afternoon, with stablemate River Seine back in fourth, Ruth Carr won the next race on the card. Evening racing at Thirsk yields wins for Charlie Johnston, David O'Meara, Ollie Pears, Jessica Macey and Brian Ellison.
15/08/2024 | The slow but steady rise of the Copgrove Hall Stud (now seemingly rebranded as Copgrove Stud ... selling the hall perhaps!?!) bred Economics continues with a comfortable two length (and then six lengths) victory in the Prix Guillaume d'Ornano G2 at Deauville this afternoon. The Irish Champion Stakes next perchance ? 'Racing League' action at Windsor saw David O'Meara's Bennetot take the £25,770 Tote Placepot Leg 5 Racing League R26 Handicap (with Charlie Johnston's Love de Vega in second) and Richard Fahey's Life On the Rocks land the £18,039 Tote Placepot Leg 3 Racing League R24 Handicap. David O'Meara also had a winner at Chepstow whilst the local winners at Beverley were provided courtesy of Kevin Ryan, Karl Burke, Nigel Tinkler, Brian Rothwell (first winner for years!), Charlie Johnston and Julie Camacho ; going through the card.
10/08/2024 | Shergar Cup day at Ascot sees David O'Meara's New Image put up another strong performance when landing the £49,180 Shergar Cup Mile by a short head, earlier Kevin Ryan's Venture Capital was second in the Shergar Cup Sprint. Trainer on the rise Gemma Tutty saddled Elsie's Ruan to a solid third in the Sweet Solera Stakes G3 at Newmarket. Haydock saw Ed Bethell's Old Cock (owned by Yorkshire racing royalty in the form of David Aykroyd) land the £16,200 Betfred 'The Classic Bookmaer' Handicap whilst David O'Meara's Dora Milaje was fourth in the Dick Hern Stakes L. At the Curragh Richard Fahey's Shadow Army was fourth in the Phoenix Stakes G1. There were local winners at Redcar for Tim Easterby and Julie Camacho.
08/08/2024 | A slightly better show by Yorkshire in the 'Racing League' at Chepstow this evening with Tim Easterby's Manila Scouse landing the £25,770 tote On The Go At tote.co.uk Racing League 18 Handicap, there were also some good placings for the Richard Fahey and Paul Midgley runners. Nigel Tinkler took the opener at Yarmouth.
04/08/2024 | The (relative) quiet after the Goodwood storm sees David & Nicola Barron's Jer Batt land the £38,655 Sky Bet, For The Fans Handicap by a neck at Haydock, where Karl Burke and Sam England also had good winners. A short distance away at Chester there are winners for Richard Fahey and Harriet Bethell.
03/08/2024 | Another winner on the final day of Glorious Goodwood with Charlie Johnston's Align The Stars (who descends from the Garrowby Stud Gull Nook/Shirley Heights family, albeit via Germany, and is a full brother to the winner of the preceding race!) taking his second valuable handicap in a row, this time in the form of the £51,540 Coral Summer Handicap ; he has shortened to 20-1 for the St.Leger. Karl Burke's Native Warrior is second in the £18,039 Coral We're Here To It Handicap. At Deauville Adrian Nicholls' Maw Lam runs another good race in defeat when third, beaten only a head and a nose, in the Prix de la Vallee d'Auge L. There are only Yorkshire runners in the £15,702 Wm Hill Summer Cup Handicap at Thirsk but the winner, by a head from Ed Bethell's James McHenry, was Roger Fell & Sean Murray's La Trinidad. David O'Meara landed all the three preceding races ! Adrian Keatley and Julie Camacho landed two for the locals at Doncaster, whilst Yorkshire's only winner at Hamilton's evening meeting was served up by Ruth Carr.
02/08/2024 | A Goodwood winner in the guise of Karl Burke's Artagnan who kept on well to land the £30,924 Hawes & Curtis Nursery Handicap. The £77,310 Coral Golden Mile Heritage Handicap saw Yorkshire trained horses occupy four of the first five places ... but unfortunately not the winners circle, with Charlie Johnston's Dutch Decoy picking up £36,255 for second ahead of Karl Burke's Holloway Boy. At Newcastle the Bryan Smith and Danny Brooke runners dead-heated for the last and there were outright winners for Ed Bethell, Kevin Ryan and Nigel Tinkler whilst at Southwell Mick & David Easterby had a double and Alan Brown took the last. Evening racing saw Julie Camacho land a winner at Newmarket and she also scored at Musselburgh, as did Liam Bailey and Paul Midgley.
01/08/2024 | Again no Yorkshire winners at Goodwood today but Ed Bethell's Intrusively, still a maiden after four runs - but never out of the first three, is a decent third in the Richmond Stakes G2 at 40-1 whilst Karl Burke's Got To Love A Grey is second in the £18,039 Buccellati Handicap and David O'Meara's Tundra Rose third in the valuable maiden. Nigel Tinkler has a winner at Nottingham, not winners in the 'Racing League' at Wolverhampton but Richard Fahey's Marine Wave is second in the £38,655 tote.co.uk Leonna Mayor Ey Up Chuck Racing League R14 Handicap and Charlie Johnston's La Pulga third in the £25,770 Tote.co.uk G'Wed Mick Quinn Racing Racing League R13 Handicap.
31/07/2024 | Not the best day for the Yorkshire raiders to Goodwood with only Karl Burke's Storm Call picking up £18,127 for second in the Alice Keppel worthy of any note. It wasn't brilliant at Redcar either, with the sole local winner coming from Ed Bethell. Evening racing at Leicester at least saw winners for Mick & Daivd Easterby and Adrian Nicholls.
30/07/2024 | Day One of Goodwood sees Tim Easterby's Art Power finish a decent second in the Lennox Stakes G2 albeit four lengths behind the winner .... but a length in front of the favourite ! Charlie Johnston's Arisaig is the sole Yorkshire winner when landing the £18,039 Ridgeview Fillies' Handicap by a neck whilst Karl Burke's Tiger Mask is fourth in the Vintage Stakes G2. It might be high summer but the other big result of the day comes over hurdles at the Galway Festival with Adrian Keatley's Gale Mahler taking the Colm Quinn BMW Novice Hurdle L by ten lengths, his sixth win in a row, and easily the most impressive, Richard Fahey also had a decent winner later on the card. The local winners at Beverley were provided by Gemma Tutty, Charlie Johnston, Declan Carroll and Roger Fell & Sean Murray.
28/07/2024 | Ed Bethell's Point Lynas, already a valuable earner in handicap company, got his first bit of 'black type' today when easily landing the Pomfret Stakes L at Pontefract, it looked like the quicker ground suited him, Charlie Johnston's Dear My Friend was a reasonable third. There were supporting winners for Karl Burke, Richard Fahey, Tim Easterby, Julie Camacho and Danny Brooke. At Deauville, the Ponty of Northern France, John & Sean Quinn's Royalty Bay was a short neck second, in a blanket finish, for the Prix Six Perfections G3 whilst Richard Fahey's Columnist was third, a head out of second, in the Prix de Cabourg G3. Sam England and Brian Ellison took the two main races at Uttoxeter.
27/07/2024 | A busy days racing, but not that much Yorkshire success today. Financially the result of the day came at Ascot where David O'Meara's New Image picked up £36,255 for finishing a neck second in the Moet & Chandon International Heritage Handicap. At Chester Richard Fahey's Garfield Shadow just held on to land the £25,480 Greenhous DAF Handicap by a neck and there were supporting winners from Gemma Tutty and Tim Easterby. At York Karl Burke's Korker was second in the £38,655 Sky Bet Dash, with Richard Fahey's Rock Opera a neck further back in third and Karl Burke's Royal Rhyme was fourth (aka last) in the borderline farcically slowly run York Stakes G2. Local winners at York came from Karl Burke, Nigel Tinkler and Craig Lidster. Yorkshire trained winners at Newcastle for Adrian Keatley, Ruth Carr and Nigel Tinkler. The Theakston Stud bred Daisy Roots landed a race at Salisbury. Goodwood fun next week.
26/07/2024 | Karl Burke's Karmology's step up to black type level was partially successful at York when she was second in the Lyic Fillies' Stakes L, with David O'Meara's Zarabanda back in fourth. There were also decent winners for Richard Fahey, David O'Meara, Gemma Tutty, Liam Bailey and Nigel Tinkler ... in fact the Lyric was the only race not to to go locals. Earlier at Thirsk there were local winners for David O'Meara and Karl Burke whilst Micky Hammond had a winner at Uttoxeter.
24/07/2024 | Two black type races at Naas this afternoon ; and both prizes fell to Yorkshire. First up Karl Burke's Miss Lamai improved from her Royal Ascot fourth to land the Marwell Stakes L and then David O'Meara's Nighteyes was a comfortable three length winner of the Yeomanstown Stud Irish EBF Stakes L. Rather closer to home there were winners at Catterick for John & Sean Quinn, Charlie Johnston, Grant Tuer and Richard Fahey.
21/07/2024 | The Karl Burke group race juggernaut continues at The Curragh today with Poet Master making the jump up from handicap company to easily land the Minstrel Stakes G2, Burke's tenth group win of the season to date (and third in July). Locally there were winners at Redcar for David O'Meara, Tony Coyle & Kaine Wood, Karl Burke, Ed Bethell, Sam England and Philip Kirby.
20/07/2024 | Ed Bethell's Regional was beaten into fourth in the Hackwood Stakes G3 at Newbury today, but not to worry as Middleham's other representative (and actually preferred in the betting) , Karl Burke's Elite Status, won nicely instead. Our best placing in the £128,907 Weatherbys Super Sprint (in which for once Richard Fahey didn't field any runners!) was Karl Burke's Kaadi who picked up £15,467 for fourth. At Ripon David O'Meara's Iron Lion landed the £25,770 feature, the Ripon Bell-Ringer Handicap, with supporting winners for Mick & David Easterby, Harriet Bethell and Paul Midgley. Karl Burke's Beautiful Diamond was a decent second in the Sapphire Stakes G2 at the Curragh. Over jumps Adrian Keatley's Kihavah, who was running on the flat in the John Smith's Cup a week ago, was second in the £31,686 Summer Handicap Hurdle at Market Rasen, where Brian Ellison also had a winner. Brian Ellison, Mark Walford and Ben Haslam all had winners at Cartmel, which was no doubt packed out with punters. Evening racing at Donnie was winners for Nigel Tinkler, Richard Fahey and David O'Meara, whilst O'Meara had a double at Haydock.
19/07/2024 | Summer is finally here and a myriad of racing today. At Newbury the Charlie Johnston trained (and Friars Ings bred) Attila The Honey landed the £25,770 UHY Ross Brooke Fillies' Handicap and the Karl Burke trained Jungle Drums was second in the Rose Bowl Stakes L. Haydock saw winners for David O'Meara and Julie Camacho. Evening racing at Hamilton saw a winner for Ruth Carr whilst Karl Burke's Caviar Heights was third in the Glasgow Stakes L and stablemate Silky Wilkie was second in the £17,523 Stewards' Cup Handicap, in which Julie Camacho's First Folio was third. David O'Meara had a winner at Newmarket whilst Kevin Ryan (a double), Mick & David Easterby, Tim Easterby, Charlie Johnston and Richard Fahey all scored at Ponty.
14/07/2024 | No flat racing in the UK this Sunday .... possibly in Bastille Day sympathy .... ! Not to worry though, today's big race in France saw a Yorkshire 1-2 with Karl Burke's Arabie coming home ahead of the Richard Fahey trained (and Branton Court Stud bred) Shadow Army. Shadow Army was formerly owned by the Branton/Parkin associated 'Bronte Collection' before being sold to Wathnan Racing prior to his poor Royal Ascot run last time out.
13/07/2024 | One of the busiest weekends of the season, with black type races at four different courses. At Newmarket hot favourite Inisherin could only manage fifth in the July Cup G1, but Karl Burke's Swingalong was beaten only a neck into second, the bridesmaid again, and Tim Easterby's Art Power was fourth, a neck out of third. Karl Burke's Lethal Levi (bred at Southwood Farm) was second in the £51,540 Bunbury Cup, with David O'Meara's old-timer Summerghand a decent third whilst Richard Fahey's Columnist was fourth in the Superlative Stakes G2, only a head out of third. At York the Branton Court Stud bred Starlust took the City Walls Stakes L and the Karl Burke trained Al Qareem was second in the John Smith's Silver Cup G3, whilst David O'Meara's Blue For You took the £23,193 John Smith's Racing Handicap but no local showing in the John Smith's Cup (still the Magnet Cup to me!), Kevin Ryan and Tim Easterby landed supporting races. At Chester John & Sean Quinn's Breege was second in the City Plate Stakes L and there was a double for Declan Carroll. Karl Burke had a winner at Ascot and also at Hamilton where Alan Brown and Julie Camacho also scored.
11/07/2024 | Day One of the Newmarket July Meeting sees the Kevin Ryan trained Sergeant Wilko comfortably land the £51,540 Bet Boost At bet365 Heritage Handicap. Sergeant Wilko's stablemate Ain't Nobody flopped in the July Stakes G2, but that race did see the Theakston Stud bred Billboard Star finish a strong second. Charlie Johnston, Ann Duffield, Karl Burke, Gemma Tutty and Tim Easterby all had winners at Carlisle whilst Tim Easterby and Ruth Carr scored at Doncaster. Away from the course Branton Court Stud took home the TBA Silver Salver (Flat Special Merit Award) from the TBA Flat Breeders' Awards on Wednesday night, and well deserved too for this relatively new operation.
09/07/2024 | More first black type today, this time at the Deauville of Yorkshire .... Ponty .... when Ed Bethell's Elim is a decent third in the Pipalong Stakes L. Kevin Ryan won the primary supporting race with Room Service and Paul Midgley took the last.
08/07/2024 | Karl Burke's Assertively gained his first bit of black type at Deauville this afternoon when second in the Prix Roland de Chambure L. Charlie Johnston had a decent winner at Chelmsford in the form of Wadacre Gomez and Philip Kirby had a winner at Market Rasen.
06/07/2024 | At a curtailed Haydock Charlie Johnston's Align The Stars landed the £51,540 bet365 Handicap, in which Tim Easterby's Flickering Halo is third. Tony Coyle & Kaine Wood landed what transpired was the last race. Sandown saw Karl Burke's Holloway Boy finish a decent second in the £50,960 Coral Challenge Handicap. Richard Fahey provided the sole local winner at Beverley. Over at Deauville Karl Burke's Kaadi was second in the Prix Yacowlef L. Evening racing saw a Karl Burke treble at Carlisle where Ann Duffield also had a winner. Tim Easterby had a winner at Leicester.
01/07/2024 | One of the 'Tattersalls £40,000' GBB Incentive races at Pontefract goes to Karl Burke's Unpsoken Love, collecting £20,616 in the process, Ed Bethell, Mick & David Easterby and Roger Fell & Sean Murray also have winners. Charlie Johnston takes the opener on Wolverhampton's evening card.
30/06/2024 | Some good Yorkshire placings at the Curragh with Kevin Ryan's The Strikin Viking putting up a good show when second in the Railway Stakes G2. Additionally Karl Burke's Arabic Legend was second in the 'From The Horses' Mouth Podcast' Premier Handicap whilst Lethal Nymph and JM Jungle were third and fourth in the Rockingham Premier Handicap for Paul Midgley and John & Sean Quinn respectively. Ben Haslam struck at Cartmel and Adrian Keatley did likewise at Uttoxeter.
29/06/2024 | Brian Ellison, based in Malton but a proud Geordie, and born on plate day, finally landed the £81,000 Northumberland Plate Handicap with Onesmoothoperator, in course record time to boot. Following the victory of Anglers Crag in the Eider Chase earlier in the year this means Ellison has landed Tyneside's biggest flat and biggest jumps race in the same year. Kevin Ryan landed the £17,010 novice with Against The Wind and Karl Burke took the £18,900 Pertemps Handicap with Bystander. Karl Burke's Bright Thunder made the trip to Chantilly to handily land the Prix de Bagatelle L. Evening racing sees winners for Richard Fahey, David O'Meara and Ed Bethell whilst Charlie Johnston scored at Lingfield.
28/06/2024 | The usual 'eve of Plate' meeting at Newcastle sees Kevin Ryan's Bergerac keeping on well to land the £25,770 Gosforth Park Cup whilst Karl Burke's Darnation was second in the Hoppings Fillies' Stakes G3. Other winners on the card were provided by Paul Midgely and Philip Kirby. The later named had scored earlier at Cartmel where Ben Haslam had a double. It was Richard Fahey who landed a double at Doncaster, where Paul Midgley also had a winner whilst David O'Meara scored at Yarmouth.
23/06/2024 | To further increase the symmetry the last day of Royal Ascot, like the opening day, saw no Yorkshire winners but, also like the opening day, there was a runner-up spot in a Group One sprint, this time courtesy of Karl Burke's Swingalong, who led most of the way but was eventually beaten by half a length. In the annual cavalry charge that is the Wokingham Burke's Lethal Levi was a decent fourth. Burke also had a winner at Newmarket and the local wins at Redcar were supplied by Ollie Pears, Grant Tuer, Nigel Tinkler, Kevin Ryan and Philip Kirby. Evening racing at Ayr saw Karl Burke's Beautiful Diamond dead heat for the Land O'Burn Fillies' Stakes L and also a winner for David O'Meara whilst O'Meara and Grant Tuer scored at Haydock.
21/06/2024 | Two winners a day with something in between is fast becoming a theme ... but it stepped up a level today when the 'machine' Inisherin put up an electrifying performance for Kevin Ryan to easily land the Commonwealth Cup G1. The second winner was supplied by David & Nicola Barron with Pilgrim landing the £56,694 Palace Of Holyrood House Handicap by half a length from Gemma Tutty's Blue Storm. David O'Meara again provided the 'in between' performance with Epic Poet occupying the runner-up berth in the £56,694 Duke of Edinburgh Handicap. Local winners at Redcar were provided by a Tim Easterby double as well as Roger Fell & Sean Murray, Kevin Ryan and Adrian Nicholls.
20/06/2024 | Two Royal Ascot winners ..... again. Like yesterday Karl Burke took the opener, this time with Shareholder in the Norfolk Stakes G2 (with Tropical Storm, jointly bred by Hellwood Stud, in second) but today we didn't need to wait until the last for our second winner with Ed Bethell's (Hong Kong bound) Mickley making it three in a row when running in the central group of three en route to landing the £61,848 Britannia Stakes, in which Karl Burke's Native Warrior was third. The 'in between notable placing' this time came from David O'Meara's Lava Stream, only beaten by a neck when second in the Ribblesdale Stakes G2. A double for Richard Fahey and winners for Tim Easterby, Karl Burke, Paul Midgley and Craig Lidster at Ripon. Charlie Johnston had a winner at Chelmsford whilst evening racing saw winners for Roger Fell & Sean Murray and Paul Midgely at Wolverhampton and Lingfield respectively.
19/06/2024 | Day two at Royal Ascot and Yorkshire took the first and last races. Karl Burke's 22-1 shot Leovanni was victorious in the opening Queen Mary Stakes G2, in which Adrian Nicholls' Maw Lam was a creditable third, only a neck out of second. The finale saw Kevin Ryan's Ain't Nobody nicely land the Windsor Castle Stakes L. 'Our' best performance in the middle part of the card came from Burke's Royal Rhyme who was fifth, only a neck out of fourth, in the Prince of Wales' Stakes G1. Karl Burke and Charlie Johnston struck at Hamilton whilst evening racing saw Ripon winners for David O'Meara, Ed Bethell and Kevin Ryan.
18/06/2024 | No Yorkshire winners on Royal Ascot Day 1, but Ed Bethell's Regional was 'our' star of the day, finishing best of the Europeans when second in the King Charles III Stakes G1 to take his lifetime earnings well over the half million mark. The prior race saw Richard Fahey's Columnist involved in the finish of the day when a nose and head third in the Coventry Stakes G2, whilst David O'Meara's old timer Get Shirty was fourth in the Ascot Stakes. At equally glamourous Catterick there were winners for Brian Ellison, Bryan Smart, Geoffrey Harker and Ed Bethell.. Evening racing at Beverley saw huge variety with the first three races at 7.5 furlongs, the next two at 8.5 furlongs and the last at 10f , the local winners were trained by Adrian Keatley, Ed Bethell, Tim Easterby, Ruth Carr and Brian Ellison.
16/06/2024 | The Karl Burke bandwagon continues to roll ; today taking the Prix du Bois G3 at Chantilly with Arabie. A valuable card at Thirsk where there were winners for Kevin Ryan, David & Nicola Baroon, Charlie Johnston and Roger Fell & Sean Murray whilst David O'Meara, Kevin Ryan and John & Sean Quinn all scored at Doncaster.
15/06/2024 | Ascot next week, but still a busy Saturday. At York Craig Lidster's (who had a good winner yesterday when Alfa Kellenic took the £18,039 Supporting Racing With Pride Fillies' Handicap) Almarada Prince is a decent second in the £51,540 Macmillan Sprint Handicap. Brian Ellison, Kevin Ryan and David O'Meara all had good winners. At Sandown David O'Meara's Nighteyes is a decent third in the Scurry Stakes L. Chester sees doubles for Tim Easterby and Charlie Johnston and a winner for Adrian Keatley. Paul Midgley has a winner at Bath. Evening racing at Hexham sees wins for Mark Walford, Sam Englan and Brian Ellison.
09/06/2024 | A strong showing by the Yorkshire raiders at Goodwood today with David O'Meara's Lava Stream (a half sister to yesterday's winner Iron Lion) taking the £39,697 Agnes Keyser Fillies' Stakes L by a neck from Kevin Ryan's Bolsena and Charlie Johnston landing two Class 3 handicaps with Finn's Charm and Tenerife Sunshine.
08/06/2024 | The Epsom -> Ascot lull, but actually two valuable Northern cards at Beverley and Haydock. On the Westwood Yorkshire horses took both the big races with Brian Ellison's Perfect Part coming home ahead of Adrian Nicholls' Maw Lam in the £25,770 Hilary Needler Trophy and Karl Burke's Shareholder carrying the £25,770 bet365 Two Year Old Trophy by a short head from Moving Force for the in-form Richard Fahey with John & Sean Quinn's JM Jingree in third (although all the runners were 'local' ;so this was nailed on!). Craig Lidster, Charlie Johnston and Mick & David Easterby provided the other local winners. At Haydock David O'Meara's Iron Lion landed the £25,770 Betfred 'Plays Fred's £5 Million' Handicap from the Charlie Johnston duo of Knightswood and Struth, Karl Burke's Korker was third in the Achilles Stakes L and Ed Bethell's Point Lynas fourth in the John Of Gaunt Stakes G3. At Catterick there was a double for Craig Lidster (so three for the day) and winners singular for Gemma Tutty, Adrian Nicholls and Tim Easterby,
02/06/2024 | Adrian Keatley's Francisco's Piece started favourite, and duly obliged, in the Prix la Fleche L on Chantilly's Derby card today, with Karl Burke's Kaadi back in third. Domestically Richard Fahey, Kevin Ryan and Grant Tuer have winners at Hamilton, with Bryan Smart likewise at Nottingham.
01/06/2024 | Derby Day, and no Yorkshire runners in the Blue Riband but John & Sean Quinn's Breege, so often running close in this sort of company, is a convincing three length winner of the Princess Elizabeth Stakes G3. There is a also a strong show in the supporting handicaps with the £38,655 Betfred 3yo 'Dash' going to Gemma Tutty's Blue Storm and the £38,655 JRA Tokyo Trophy Handicap to David O'Meara's always dependable Misty Grey. The action at Musselburgh results in winners for David O'Meara, Karl Burke and David & Nicola Barron. Late afternoon / early evening racing at Hexham gives winners for Mark Walford, Brian Ellison, Sam England, Ben Haslam and Micky Hammond whilst Charlie Johnston has a winner at Lingfield.
31/05/2024 | Day One of the Derby meeting at Epsom sees a valuable double for the in form Karl Burke with Teej A taking the £38,655 Woodcote Stakes and Bolster the £50,960 Betfred Nifty 50 Handicap. David O'Meara also got in on the action with Rhoscolyn keeping on to take the £38,655 Molson Coors Handicap whilst Richard Fahey's Native American was second in the Surrey Stakes L. Elsewhere Micky Hammond and Kevin Ryan had winners at Carlisle whilst evening racing saw a treble for Tim Easterby at Carlisle, where Philip Kirby also had a winner whilst at Doncaster there were winners for Richard Fahey, Ed Bethell and Jedd O'Keeffe.
26/05/2024 | Somewhat less busy than yesterday but .... wow ! At Dusseldorf Karl Burke's Darnation runs out a comfortable winner of the German 1,000 Guineas G2. Less than an hour later stablemate Fallen Angel, homebred by Branton Court Stud (and amazingly by the same sire ; Too Darn Hot!) led nearly all the way to land the Irish 1,000 Guineas G1. This is the first Yorkshire trained English/Irish/French classic winner since Laurens (also trained by Karl Burke) took the Prix de Diane G1 in 2018, and, breeding wise, the first since 1997 when the Garrowby Stud bred Classic Park also landed the Irish 1,000 Guineas G1 (and the Copgrove Hall Stud raised Peintire Celebre took the Prix du Jockey Club G1). Fallen Angel might go for the Diane in preference to Ascot, which would allow Darnation to run in the Coronation .... ! And let's not neglect to mention that Adrian Keatley took the bumper at Kelso.
25/05/2024 | A busy Saturday. At Haydock Kevin Ryan's Inisherin confirmed his Guineas form when running out the convincing winner of the Sandy Lane Stakes G2, Royal Ascot, presumably, beckons. Karl Burke's Alaskan Gold finished fourth, earlier Ryan's Apiarist was third in the £51,540 Betfred Silver Bowl Handicap whilst Declan Carroll's Emiyn occupied the same position in the £25,770 Hell Nook Handicap. At Goodwood Charlie Johnston's Francophone appeared to have progressed from her York form slightly when landing the Height of Fashion Stakes L and also is presumably Ascot bound. Stablemate Candle Of Dubai was a promising second in the £25,770 Darley British EBF Fillies' Restricted Novice Stakes. At the Curragh Ed Bethell's stable star Regional made his seasonal reappearance when second in the Greenlands Stakes G2, with Tim Easterby's Art Power fourth. At Chester Richard Fahey's Columnist took the £15,288 British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes and David O'Meara had a double. Karl Burke had a winner at York where Paul Midgley's Lethal Nymph and Tim Easterby's Copper Kinght were respectively second and third in the £25,770 Wm Hill Extra Place Races Daily Handicap. A no doubt packed late afternoon/early evening meeting at Cartmel saw a winner for Sam England.
23/05/2024 | It's all happening or, in one case, not happening. Evening racing at Sandown saw Karl Burke's Royal Rhyme land his first group win when taking the Brigadier Gerard Stakes G3. Later on the card stablemate Ice Max was fourth in the Heron Stakes L. Over at Longchamp Adrian Keatley's Flying Finn got her all important black-type when third in the Prix Finlande L. Locally Paul Midgley, Bryan Smart, Declan Carroll, Mark Walford and David & Nicola Barron all had winners at Catterick. It has been announced that the Copgrove Hall Stud bred Economics will not be supplemented for the Derby and, indeed, may be kept at ten furlongs this term. Finally Thornton Park Stud (or more specifically the whole estate) is back on the market, this time with 633 acres and a price tag of £9.75m.
22/05/2024 | Charlie Johnston's Madame Ambassador, who needs every yard of today's ten furlongs, finally, aged five, got her black type win when taking the EBF Rothesay Stakes L at Ayr, David O'Meara took the next. Evening racing at Kempton yielded another winner for Charlie Johnston.
18/05/2024 | A big race double at Newbury for Karl Burke with Elite Status impressive when winning the Carnarvon Stakes L and Lethal Levi (bred at Southwood Farm) putting up another strong performance to take the £38,655 HKJC World Pool Handicap. Adrian Nicholls, Paul Midgley and Ed Bethell all had winners at Thirsk, albeit the later's was 'only' a dead-heat. Evening, or more accurately, late afternoon racing saw a winner for Jedd O'Keeffe at Bangor and at Doncaster for Grant Tuer and David O'Meara.
17/05/2024 | Less local glory on the final day of the Dante Meeting, however David O'Meara took the penultimate contest with Riot , Karl Burke's Miss Lamai was second in the Marygate Fillies' Stakes L (in which Mick & David Easterby's Glorious Kitty was an eye-catching fourth on debut), Kevin Ryan's Bolsena was a head third in the Michael Seely Memorial Fillies' Stakes L whilst Karl Burke's Al Qareem fourth in the Yorkshire Cup G2. Evening racing yielded a Hamilton winner for Richard Fahey.
16/05/2024 | The best Derby trial of the season, and it's won impressively by a Yorkshire bred horse .... who was recently been withdrawn from Epsom to 'remove the tempatation' ! Yes, the Dante Stakes G2 at York was won by the Copgrove Hall Stud bred Economics, trained by (the also Yorkshire bred!) William Haggas. A six length victory over the favourite would imply this was a 'true' run and not a fluke but the winner did seem to run a trifle green and he's a big galloping type, hence the decision to swerve the Epsom switchbacks and undulations ... albeit he could be supplemented for £75,000. Irish Derby anyone ? It was a good day for a tiny corner of Yorkshire as Copgrove's (literal) neighbour Branton Court Stud landed the £15,462 Frank Whittle Partnership Novice Stakes by a short head with Andesite. Earlier on the card Ed Bethell had landed the £38,655 Hambleton Handicap with Point Lynas, Karl Burke's Looking For Lynda was second in the £25,770 Lindum York Handicap, and Richard Fahey's Dark Vintage third in the Westow Stakes L. Micky Hammond had a double at Perth.
15/05/2024 | The Dante meeting at York marks, to some, the start of summer, although not on the evidence of the weather today. Charlie Johnston's Francophone was, arguably, a surprising second in a slowly run Musidora Stakes G3. Kevin Ryan's Aleezdancer was a convincing winner of the £25,770 Churchill Tyres Handicap, Richard Fahey's Shadow Army landed the £20,616 Novice Stakes by a short head which was also the distance that Mick & David Easterby's Digital Resdev prevailed by in the £12,885 Conundrum HR Consulting Handicap. Further placings included Kevin Ryan's Washington Heights finishing a nose and two necks fourth in the Duke of York Stakes G2 and Adrian Keatley's Kihavah second in the £33,501 Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Jorvik Handicap, with Ed Bethell's Chillingham third.
12/05/2024 | On the all-weather today at Newcastle David O'Meara's Misty Grey, who has already had a good start to the season, landed the £38,655 Download The Racecourse App Raceday Ready Handicap. O'Meara had an additional winner on the card, as did Roger Fell & Sean Murray . At Longchamp the French 2,000 Guineas, more properly the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches G1, saw the Sir Robert Ogden bred Kathmandu finish second, beaten only a head. Quite how Yorkshire bred he actually is remains to be seen, but I'm claiming it for the White Rose county, at least for now !
11/05/2024 | Yorkshire's best result today came at Ascot with Grant Tuer's Bellarchi landing the £23,193 Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% British EBF Fillies' Handicap and Richard Fahey's Ramazan a head second in the Victoria Cup Heritage Handicap. Richard Fahey and David & Nicola Barron both had winners at Haydock.
10/05/2024 | No winners on the final day at Chester, but Declan Carroll's Emiyn collected a useful £40,613 for second in the feaure Chester Cup. Charlie Johnston took the last as Ascot, whilst at Market Rasen Mick & David Easterby took the opener but the extended family had a shock later on the card with William Easterby (son of Tim) suffering a bad fall and taken to hospital. Evening racing saw Paul Midgely take the last at Nottingham, a Sam England winner at Sedgefield and winners for Adrian Keatley, Tim Easterby, Danny Brooke, Richard Fahey, Mick & David Easterby and Tony Coyle & Kaine Wood ; a Yorkshire full house.
09/05/2024 | Another quiet day for Yorkshire at Chester with the highlight coming from Karl Burke's Teej A when she landed the £20,384 EBF Maiden Stakes. Philip Kirby had a winner at Stratford.
08/05/2024 | Day one of Chester's May Meeting was not without it's sadness, but Richard Fahay's Garfield Shadow took the £15,288 CAA Stellar Handicap and Mick & David Easterby's Knicks the £15,288 tote.co.uk Saddle-Up For More Than Racing Handicap, Karl Burke's Golden West was fourth in the, ultimately tragic, Chester Vase G3, albeit some way behind the unfortunate winner. Patrick Neville saddled the winner of the second race at Kelso.
04/05/2024 | 2,000 Guineas Day, and the Second Coming of Pegasus didn't happen ; best placed of the Yorkshire runners was Kevin Ryan's Inisherin in a promising sixth. Earlier on the card Karl Burke's Liberty Lane took the £51,540 Suffolk Heritage Handicap, with Charlie Johnston's Dutch Decoy in second whilst Karl Burke's Beautiful Diamond was third in the Palace House Stakes G3, a head and a short head behind the winner. At Thirsk John & Sean Quinn's Titan Rock took the £25,770 Thirsk Hunt Cup by a head from Gemma Tutty's Look Back Smiling whilst the other local winners were supplied by Kevin Ryan, Adrian Keatley, Roger Fell & Sean Murray, Tim Easterby and a David O'Meara double. At Goodwood Charlie Johnston's Qitaal was a neck second in the £25,770 Wm Hill Epic Boost Handicap. Micky Hammond had a winner at Uttoxeter as did Brian Ellison at Hexham.
03/05/2024 | Day One of the Guineas meeting at Newmarket sees Karl Burke's Caviar Heights run out a four (and then eleven) length winner of the Newmarket Stakes L .... a Yorkshire 'trial' winner that DOES have a classic (Derby) entry. Kevin Ryan's Volterra takes the closing £15,462 mile handicap. Bryan Smart and Brian Ellison had winners at Musselburgh whilst evening racing at Newcastle saw winners for Kevin Ryan, Grant Tuer, Harriet Bethell, David O'Meara and Philip Kirby.
20/04/2024 | Another classic trial win for a Yorkshire trained horse .... with no classic entries .... when David O'Meara's Esquire holds on well to land the Greenham Stakes G3 at Newbury. Karl Burke's Al Qareem starts off 2024 the same way he finished 2023 ; with a second place in a Newubry group race, this time in the John Porter Stakes G3, Julie Camacho takes the last. Obviously in good early season form David O'Meara has a double at Thirsk where Karl Burke and Mick & David Easterby also have winners, the later with the Theakston Stud bred Two Brothers. Sue Smith had a winner at Bangor whilst Geoff Harker took the last on Nottingham's evening card.
18/04/2024 | Another good day at the Craven Meeting with Kevin Ryan's Washington Heights running out the 33-1 winner of the Abernant Stakes G3, in which Karl Burke's Spycatcher was third, and the later's Poet Master taking the £25,770 Consign With The National Stud Handicap. Ben Haslam landed a double at Ripon where Karl Burke, Tim Easterby, Adrian Keatley and Liam Bailey all had winners whilst Charlie Johnston had a double on Chelmsford's evening card. At Cheltenham Ruth Jefferson's Lavida Adiva was a good second in the £26,015 Catesby Estates Mares' Challenger Series Final Handicap Hurdle.
17/04/2024 | The Craven Meeting at Newmarket marks the end of the phoney war and the start of the flat season proper. And it went well, with a minor shock in the Nell Gwyn Stakes G3 with Richard Fahey's Pretty Crystal holding on gamely by a neck at 18-1. Not entered for the English Guineas, initial indications are that she may be next aimed at the German equivalent, although if the second wins at Newmarket they may rue that decision ! Kevin Ryan's Hi Royal was a decent head third in the Earl of Sefton Stakes G3 whilst Karl Burke's Caviar Heights, at 50-1, occupied the same position in the Feilden Stakes L. Kevin Ryan's Bolsena landed the fillies' maiden by three lengths and David O'Meara's Aberama Gold was a decent third in the £25,770 Weatherbys Global Stalllions App Handicap. Beverley was abandoned.
01/04/2024 | Yorkshire's first European Group winner of the season today when Karl Burke's Making Dreams, who was running in sellers last summer, hacks up by six lenghths in bottomless ground in the Prix Penelope G3 at Saint-Cloud. Ruth Carr had a double at Wolverhamtpon and Patrick Neville had a winner at Huntingdon.
29/03/2024 | Quite why the big All Weather day comes six days after the start of the turf season is .... beyond me, but still, here we are. All Weather Champions Day at Newcastle sees Karl Burke's Cuban Tiger hold on gamley to land the Burradon Stakes L by a neck, whilst David O'Meara's Misty Grey was a good second in the £77,310 BetUK All-Weather Sprint Handicap. No winners at Lingfield (or Chelmsford for that matter) but Julie Camacho's Dingle was a neck second in the £33,501 BetMGM All Weather Vase Mile Handicap, with Ed Bethell's Quandary finishing in the same position, and at the same distance, in the £23,193 BetMGM All-Weather Vase Fillies' Handicap whilst David O'Meara's Barenboim was third in the BetUK All-Weather Vase Marathon Handicap.
24/03/2024 | Unfortnately it was announced today that John Quinn's Highfield Princess had succumbed to the fracture she suffered earlier in the week and had been put down. Karl Burke also revealed that yesterday was his first visit to the racecourse since last summer, having been recovering from cancer in the interim.
